  1. Summary

The troupe has escaped the Circus. Uh, does anyone remember how to be human?

Will likely feature lots of Kinger focus, plenty of angst and hurt/comfort, and heavy focus on platonic relationships.

    Summary

It began with an alert in his email inbox- somebody had altered some code he wrote.
Not a particularly unusual notification for Grant to get, considering he had been a computer scientist for more than three decades. It was slightly more unusual, however, considering the notification said that the code had been modified by Grant himself- something he had definitely not done- and also considering the system being altered had been shut down more than eighteen years ago.

    ...What the hell.

Or: Six people have been living their normal lives, entirely unaware of the copies of their consciousness trapped in a brightly-coloured digital hellscape. That is, at least, until said copies escape the Circus, and six people wake up with both sets of memories, determined that the family they formed in a very different reality is one they will find again.

There was a problem. An issue, a minor error. Something in the code that clearly wasn't working correctly.

What if after the events of episode 7, Caine decides that the players unhappiness and general issues with the circus are his fault, and he goes about fixing that in the worst way possible.

I LOVE THIS FIC! I feel like the description doesn't quite do it justice so here's an attempted summary with as little spoilers as possible:

This is an AU in which Caine's unable to break certain rules he was programmed with (think Laws of Robotics), and has to follow human commands. In his attempts to follow these rules and commands he reaches a breaking point, and the Circus breaks with him.

I think this concept is depicted really well. The characterization is great, the plot is well thought out, and I love stories that grapple with personhood and free will in contexts where that can be stripped away. I don't know the first thing about programming but the author works in their coding knowledge into the story in a way that makes it feel all the more fleshed out, and especially believable since the fic is entirely in Caine's POV and he would of course think in those terms. Overall, a great fic. I look forward to seeing future instalments in this series :))

    Summary

“Caine?” Pomni asked again. The orb drifted up and down in a nod. “How do I know it’s you? Why do you look so…” Small, weird, different. She’d been anticipating seeing a Caine clawing at the walls, or crying, or yelling. How ever she imagined finding Caine, he looked like, well, Caine. Not this.

    oOo

The plan was simple: undelete Caine, get the Circus back up and running, and place some restrictions so Caine couldn't mess with them.

Unfortunately, Caine and the Circus are a little more complicated than meets the eye.
