When Whirl is dropped into yet another life-or-death situation (he seems to keep finding those), he doesn’t really care all that much. In fact, it's even a little amusing. Besides, he'll get out! He always does. And if he doesn’t? Oh well. He’ll go out guns blazing, but… he’s had a good enough run.
Then two bundles of energy barrel their way into his life, and he finds himself caring a lot more than he probably should.

Bucky hates this. Hates this assignment. Hates this place. Hates everything about it.
Hates that he and Sam agreed to do Rhodes a little favor, go check out a not strictly on the books government installation after the last bunch of poor saps Rhodes sent there never came back out.
Hates being in this terrible, creepy underground facility, this warped reflection of all the other terrible, creepy underground facilities he spent way too much of the past eighty years in. Hates how there’s always an unpleasant memory around the next corner. And something worse around the rest.
He hates the realization that unpleasant memories are quickly becoming the least of his problems. And he really hates the sinking feeling that they might not make it out of here intact. Or at all.

Duuuuuuuuude. Survival horror is usually not my first pick, but I was looking for Bucky whump and HOOOO BOY did I get it. The plot plotted, the twists twisted, the horror did it's thing. And oh my gosh, the writing of this thing is INSANE. The way the stream of consciousness is written, *especially* for Bucky??? The use of repetition and run-on sentences in particular blew my mind. And the dialog? The not-knowing-what's-real because the writer is just that skilled??? MASTERFUL. The Sam&Bucky dynamic was so in-character and just sooo enjoyable to read - from the lighthearted stuff to the traumatic stuff to the ending. Love love love. 10/10 would read again, and I'm DEFINITELY gonna have to go check out this person's other works!
