Varka trips a little. “What was that?”
Lohen responds by sinking further into Varka’s chest, enveloped by his heartbeat and expanding-retracting lungs. “They’re, just… loud. And needy.”
Varka snorts. “I’d have thought that would give you some common ground with ‘em.”
Lohen wants to pinch him, but his arm won’t move.
“And maybe you’ve got that much in common with Mondstadt, too,” says Varka, “because we need you. So you have to survive this, alright?”
Lohen doesn’t actually want to die, he just really, really, really wants his subordinates to live. Sometimes that means standing between them and a heaving, snarling beast and letting it do its thing.

Plus there’s competition in the weapons trade.” Law folded the paper up, taking a deep breath. “We’re not doing anything else right now. After the Polar Tang is fixed up, we’ve got no plans. Fucking with the world nobles is right up our alley.”

His past still haunts him, but his shoulders were light. He still hates his enemies, but the burden of it wasn't suffocating. And everyone was doing their best to make his tragedies-turned-nightmares into a hope for the future.
And in turn, they all saw the effort he gives back for their own. While he's still too tired to physically show it, he shows his care through his actions.
They just wished that Law would pick less fights in doing so.

"Uh, what are you doing?" Lohen's eyes narrow as he watches Varka's every move.
Varka pauses at the question, brows knitting together, as if perplexed. "What does it look like? I'm offering you first aid," he says. "I may not be as skilled as our medics or healers, but I can at least make sure you don't bleed out all over my desk."
"And why are you doing that?" Lohen frowns some. Varka is just one of those people he thinks he'll never really understand. Again, an enigma. Shouldn't he be pushing Lohen out the door right now? Ordering him to get medical attention (not that he'd listen, even if he did)?
"Because you're refusing to see a medic," Varka answers, simple and to the point. "It's my job as the Grand Master to make sure my knights are in top shape and taken care of."
"I don't recall personally tending to your subordinate's scrapes being a part of your job description."
"Hah! So now you want to talk about job descriptions eh, Vice Captain?"

"A random gust of wind hits me from the side and sends me tumbling downhill like a sack of potatoes. And when I got back up?" His expression crumpled into genuine tragedy. "Gone. Both of them. Just poof. Vanished into thin air."
Paimon tilted her head. "Huh? They just… disappeared?"
"Disappeared," Lohen repeated, the word bitter on his tongue. "I didn't even get to land a single hit. I had a bruised hand, nothing serious, I've had worse, and I was about to try fighting them one-handed just to make it interesting. And then the wind ruined everything."

Every action has its consequence, which is how Lohen found himself sitting in the confinement room bored out of his mind. Although his boredom was momentarily quelled by an unsurprising guest, Lohen still had his time to serve before he could truly be “free”, and even then, a lecture was still quietly waiting for him before he could step out from the headquarters.

The door swings open, heavy footsteps meeting the floor underneath. He doesn't look up to see who it is, he doesn't have to. A weight drops beside him, a silent but comforting presence all the same. Neither say anything, not immediately. They simply find something to stare at, their breaths the only sounds they make. There was a time where he hated how well it seemed the Grand Master could read him, believing it to be an opening for control to be taken from him. But now? He finds himself grateful for it, even extends some trust with it.
"Well," he finally breaks the silence, figuring he might as well do it first. Get in his final word before the hammer swings down. "Guess that's that then, huh?" His hand falls to his lap, limp. Varka makes no move to answer. "The great heroes defeated the big bad villain and uncovered the remains of his influence while the sinner cleaned up his mistakes." A dry laugh fills the air, his heart isn't really in it. "At least I had one last hurrah. Certainly wasn't the way I imagined it, but eh, beggars can't be choosers."
