Summary
This is the direct continuation of the series Leaving It All Behind, if you did not read the first book I promise that you will be really confused reading this. (go read that first and then come back to this)

Zuko and Sokka have successfully escaped Zhao’s prison camp and have begun their journey across the Earth Kingdom in search of Aang or Chief Hakoda, whoever they find first. Still recovering from their experiences in captivity, both Zuko and Sokka struggle to heal from their past trauma while facing new enemies in an unfamiliar territory. Lucky for them, Sokka is full of good ideas and Zuko never gives up without a fight.
The Gaang (plus Jet) are continuing their journey to help Aang master all the elements and are faced with a few unexpected surprises.
A group of escaped prisoners tries their best to fix past mistakes and find their place in the war torn world, it doesn’t come as easy as they would have hoped.

zuko convinces sokka they need to leave the cabin before zhao comes back (chang killed him but they don’t know that) n the healer, V, tells sokka the care plans that zuko needs to follow to prevent infection especially creams on his rectum that’s still bleeding. when it comes time to settle down for the night zuko refuses to wash up and get his bandages changed so they argue. sokka manages to convince zuko to bathe but he refuses his help treating the wounds.
after they both bathe n treat their own wounds zuko asks how sokka knew what zhao did to him n that’s when sokka tells him that he was the one to find him in zhao’s bed. zuko only remembers flashes from their escape like sokka removing the muzzle n being carried n bathed by him. sokka tries to get it through to zuko that was zhao did to him wasn’t his fault no matter how many times he tried to escape n what ozai did was also fucked up. they both cry n hold each others hands in the morning
ara makes the boys follow her to find zukka bc of her guilt
EVE N V DIE bc zhao sent orders to have them killed if they couldn’t find zukka on the mountain. V died instantly but eve took 1 down with her
aang ends up takin jet with him n katara to the swamp where they hallucinate sokka n his dead mom. jet convinces aang that the flying boar he saw in his vision was a sign of the Beifong’s family crest. there they meet toph and jet taunts her into inviting them to the tournament before convincing her to join them
zukka find a small town n they stay the night at a tavern. zuko bathes him when he breaks down from the scars
in the morning a butcher is racist to sokka so zuko axe kicks the mans table n robs the meat. zukka steal a baby komodo rhino for its fireproof leather n sokka treats zuko’s wounds b4 kissing him
the next town they play 20 questions n talk about their family n where they grew up b4 sokka asks about the suppressants n zhao n zuko makes him swear not to tell iroh
when sokka is sleeping zuko going into town n steals a bunch of supplies including the leather they were gonna kill the calf for which leads to sokka yelling at zuko bout how reckless he was n that zuko should’ve told him bc this is exactly what led to zhao capturing zuko bc he left iroh with no warning so he didn’t have any backup
during the night zukka gets attacked by the rough rhinos n sokka gets stabbed n zuko carries him away n cauterizes the wound before surrendering so that they treat the infection. he gets fevers dreams of katara, hakoda, n yue tellin him he’s hurt b4 he dreams bout prison n zhao hurting zuko. when sokka tries to escape he isn’t able to untie zuko in time so they’re both restrained n forced to watch tRR raid towns
katara decides to tell hakoda about sokka's death b4 they go to ba sing se. katara’s bitter bout him leavin n wonders what would’ve happened to sokka if he stayed. the gaang agrees that jet should stay while they go meet iroh. they put together how zuko died n aang blames himself. the dai li stop letter from hakoda n sokka arrivin
jet hears tRR are nearby and takes off with Bo to kill them. with chang droppin the bounty tRR decide to kill them but 1 of them wants to rape sokka after he reveals zukka. zuko bows to the leader to get raped instead of sokka but they change their mind when they see the scars. he kills the archer. sokka wakes up n kills 1 with a stick before jet shows up to try n fight the leader. when he fails shen pulls up to defend them. jet n bo kill the creep n the water tribe appear n kill the leader
sokka gets sedated after seeing zuko’s wounds in his delirious state. hakoda interrogates reho n co. sokka wakes up n sneaks into zuko’s bed. when he sees ara sokka says they have to get rid of her b4 she gets zhao n jet runs out of the tent to try n attack zuko but sokka beats the shit out of him b4 zuko pulls him off n calms him down. they get their own tent n bathe together
zukka break up bc zuko thinks he’s puttin sokka in danger n he leaves. reho tells jet zuko is the crown prince so he writes to the earth kingdom which leads to them arrivin n torturing reho for info n takin zuko away who had come back for sokka. zuko kisses him in front of everyone before lettin himself get taken away. sokka swears to rescue him with the gaang. sokka sends a letter for help to suki

Summary
The attack on the Northern Water Tribe goes differently, Aang and the ocean spirit don’t destroy the entire Fire Nation fleet, only most of them.
Zhao escapes, taking Sokka and a few other Water Tribe men as prisoners. Knowing Sokka is traveling with the Avatar he gets sent to Zhao’s “special prison camp” that is hidden near the Earth Kingdom colonies.
Sokka gets a taste of the real war, not the war that he thinks he knows from traveling with the Avatar. While Zhao’s prisoner, he struggles to survive the inhuman conditions. Alone and thought to be dead, he feels himself slowly losing hope.
Seeing a familiar face brings back his hope, even if that face is the scarred Prince of the Fire Nation.
Sokka and Zuko come together to survive and end up depending on each other for a lot more than they ever thought possible.

during the battle at the north pole sokka gets captured with several other water tribe members by Zhao who has them decide amongst themselves 10 members to die before reaching his personal prison camp. after several older men volunteer they’re thrown overboard still chained up to drown. sokka had also watched another prisoner get beaten to death
in the prison sokka gets tortured with boiling water on his hand and later whipped to draw a map of all the places he’s traveled with aang. once done zhao reveals he also got a very similar one from zuko, who is also a prisoner
sokka is helped by a prisoner, ara, who had been captured when she was 16 and is now 20+ who helped bandage his wounds but also warns him that she won’t waste her hard earned medical supplies on someone looking for trouble or who is friends with zuko
sokka almost gets sa’d in the showers but zuko beats them up which later leads to zuko receives 10 lashings and sokka gets 5
benders receive weekly suppressant pills but zuko gets 3 then 4 instead of 1 bc his fire keeps coming back. the two of them work in the coal mines when a storm comes and floods the mines. sokka watches as a girl, Nizi, breaks down and refuses to escape leading to her dying in the mines
sokka gets transferred to dish duty with zuko while other prisoners fix the mines. sokka does his best to bug zuko but on pill day zuko gets upped to 4 and is much more talkative before he passes out and convulses. sokka takes him to the owner of the kitchens, chang, who punches zuko to make him throw up. the next day zuko agrees again to help sokka in his escape plans. sokka asks him for blueprints of some machines in the camp and zuko agrees to get them
10) which leads to zhao saying ‘zuko said sokka was going to help him escape’ zuko didn’t say shit and sokka knows it. when sokka claims he hates zuko and would never hypothetically escape with him zhao has him torture zuko to prove it. zuko doesn’t hold it against sokka and still managed to draw the blueprints for him
zhao takes several guards with him on a mission and while away earth benders break in looking for Nizi, killing guards and prisoners alike. shen breaks zuko’s chains and he defends them as they try to escape. sokka raids zhao’s office for katara’a necklace when the warden finds him. zuko saves sokka and distracts the man as sokka grabs his swords. when sokka comes back he kills the man to protect zuko by stabbing him repeatedly until zuko snaps him out of it
they stop by the kitchens when they realize Chang is trapped inside. after breaking down the door they find him trapped under too much rubble and leave him at his orders. they stop by the med room for supplies and pick up Reho, someone sokka coal mined with and make their way to the rendezvous point where they meet up with Shen, Opal, and Ara. sokka tells them he lied about which village they were heading too incase of rats and it’s decided that Sokka Ara Opal and Reho will go to the village for supplies while zuko and shen wait outside
ara betrays them and sends a hawk to zhao about their change in locations which leads to opal being killed her and sokka gettihn captured again and the rest escaping. ara has stockholm syndrome and is in love with zhao so she hates zuko bc of his obsession with zuko. implied zhao has raped zuko and she’s mad it wasn’t her
zuko comes back and carries a freshly tortured sokka away and they stay in a tree for the night but the yuyan archers find them and stall long enough for them to get captured again. zhao threatens to skin zuko if sokka tries anything and to let the troop gang rape sokka is zuko tries anything. the doctor helps sokka escape from where he was tied to a pole and he finds zuko in a daze after being raped again by zhao. ara finds the two and helps unshackle zuko and distracts zhao so they can escape. sokka carries zuko away through a storm and punches zuko to make him puke the pills out
they get found by a healer who takes them to her cabin where she makes a cure for the poison using the papers that sokka steals from zhao’s desk. he bathes a delirious zuko but sokka is lowkey feral and needs to be sedated so he stops interfering in them treating the wounds. zhao comes by and she lies saying sokka refused her help. zhao returns to camp where chang kills his brother with poison and tells shen and reho to take ara and leave

For the first time since his speech, the employee glances at Keith, and then does a double take. Some light seems to return into his deep brown eyes.
“Actually, you’re cute as hell,” he says, and Keith goes red. “Take two cabbages.”

This is not unusual. Lance and Hunk frequently have to explain each other’s trains of thought to the team at large.
“Lance thinks he can see the future,” Hunk explains tiredly. “He is not a Seer. He just gets lucky, occasionally, and he’s observant. There is nothing I can do to convince him otherwise.”
“That’s because you’re wrong,” Lance says patiently. “I do so get visions. I told you about the mermaid planet when we were fifteen, remember?”
“Lance, you dreamed once about alien mermaids and the universe is so batshit insane that it ended up being true. That is not predicting the future.”
“Mhm, sure. And the fact that I knew the names of the mermaids we could trust was coincidence.”
