They need help, desperately. Help that is not in this house, or down the path, or anywhere close by, and she's not sure how to buy him time.
She doesn't realize that she's sobbing until she has to scrub a hand over her eyes so she can see. Riza is already getting back to her feet, wobbly from the adrenaline and fear, when a hand pats her leg. It's Berthold, looking up at her solemnly. 'Nothing can fix this', his eyes say, though it's only a trickle of blood that comes out of his mouth, trailing down his chin.
She jerks away from his touch, arms wrapped tightly around her own chest. “I'll be back soon, I promise.”
