"Yes, we could also use some help with the sheep."
Ellie squealed and tugged on Joel's jacket.
One look at her smile, and he knew what his decision would be.

Ellie has a no-show father and a drunk mother. Then, one night, Sarah and Ellie are being driven home from the arcade by Ellie's not-so-sober mother. They crash. Sarah doesn't make it... Ellie's mom doesn't make it. But Ellie does. She has nothing left. Despite Joel's fights against it, he takes Ellie in, because she is the only thing he has left of Sarah. He thought that he'd never be a father again, but maybe that isn't true.
TLDR// There is no apocalypse in this one. I'm going to be adapting the game to a modern-style. Multiple chapters! Lots of angst!

It makes him think of the other night with that nasty motel bedspread pulled right up beneath her chin, asking about locks on the door. It makes him think of a scared kid.
“What difference does it make?” Ellie mumbles out while avoiding his gaze. “I’m out of there now.” She turns a steely gaze towards him. “And I’m not going back.”
“Wasn’t planning on makin’ ya,” Joel whispers in the late night air. The stars are coming out. If it’s a clear enough night, maybe he can point out Mars to her.

He forces himself to relax, adjusts his stormy expression enough that it won’t scare her off before he figures out just what the hell is going on here. “You’d better tell me what’s goin’ on and where the hell Ellie is—”
“That little girl is Ellie.”
Joel barks an unamused laugh, but his rage is quickly reaching a boiling point. “That’s real funny, Tommy, but I ain’t in the mood for fuckin' jokes.”
“I’m serious, Joel.”
“Tommy, I am about to lose my patience—”
“Fuckin’ look at her!” Tommy exclaims, gesturing wildly at the kid. “Look, you think I don’t know how crazy this sounds? Jesus Christ, Joel!"
The whole time Tommy’s talking, Joel can’t stop staring at the girl. She’s watching them go at it with wide brown eyes full of tears she’s refusing to let fall, and Joel feels another gunshot rip through his heart.
Or, Ellie mysteriously transforms into her six-year-old self, and Joel gets to know his daughter all over again. Meanwhile, Ellie gets a second chance at childhood.
