Summary
The spotlight refocused, and the performer emerged. The figure striding out from the curtain was not a drag queen but a drag king. He was average in height, a few inches shorter than Caitlyn, and roughly her age. His vivid pink side-cut was combed and slicked back. He wore a vintaged red and black motorcycle jacket over a white shirt, with pin-striped pants. Motorcycle boots with something of a steampunk motif completed the outfit. He struck a disco pose, isolating her hips skillfully and jerking them to the beat.
He spun around on his heel, popped the collar on his leather jacket, and launched into motion: Strutting, dipping and swaying purposefully toward Caitlyn with a gleeful spark in his eyes. Surely, he had mortified many a woman on her birthday.

“Because you do. You always have.”Vi leaned in then, her forehead resting lightly against Caitlyn’s, her hand still cradling her cheek.
“Guess I can’t argue with that,” she murmured, her lips quirking into a faint smile.“No,” Caitlyn replied, her voice barely above a whisper. “You can’t.”
Vi tilted her head, her eyes searching Caitlyn’s face, and then leaned in, pressing a tender kiss to her temple.
Caitlyn closed her eye, leaning into the touch, her hand coming to rest lightly on Vi’s knee.“Play it again,” Vi murmured, her voice softer now, like a secret just for Caitlyn.

Vi steps into Caitlyn's house, hears her playing "Dear Friend Across the River" on the piano, and slowly comes to realize that this is no longer just Caitlyn's house—it's their home now.

At the confession, Vi grits her teeth – grunting as she lifts Caitlyn into her arms and guides her into laying in the centre of the bed with very little grace or finesse. There’s simply no time for it, not when Vi can feel her own wetness smearing along her inner thighs; not when her mouth waters at the mere thought of devouring what rightfully belongs to her.
As a hand is pressed against Caitlyn's chest, settled right above her beating heart, Vi knows that her mark will forever linger.
She moves until she hovers over Caitlyn’s body, her fingers burning into the skin that years for her touch as he holds her arms above her head. At the knee that pushes against her sex, Caitlyn hankers down, a gasp being pulled from her throat as sparks of pleasure seem to tear at her flesh.
“I’m yours, Vi; I really am,” she urges, letting out a ragged breath through her parted lips, “if you’ll still have me.”

Summary
Lightning flashes outside as Caitlyn reaches the landing, and she stops before one of the floor-to-ceiling windows. Rain pours from the sky, the drops pitter-pattering on the glass while thunder rumbles in the distance. She does not know how long she stands there watching the rain with her eyes lost in the blur of the city, the feeling in her chest growing slowly, steadily. She had managed to smother it before, her face a steely mask as strangers’ arms wrapped around her shoulders and their lips whispered condolences into her ears. As their eyes observed her with pity, and their voices spoke of vengeance and war and responsibilities Caitlyn was not ready to shoulder while her mother’s corpse lay on display a few feet behind her. She had kept it together for as long as she could.
Now, away from all the prying eyes, in the solitude of a home with a buried mother and a grieving father, Caitlyn feels herself begin to crumble.

It was more that she expected Caitlyn would create an entry in her mental encyclopedia of Sad but Relevant If Not Necessarily Interesting Vi Facts, call it Birthdays (Or Lack Thereof), sandwiched between the entries for Bed (Great In) and Block (With Face), and refer to it whenever she needed to contextualize something or check her privilege or whatever.
She did not expect, a few months later, that Caitlyn would start planning what she referred to as your first-ever birthday party and what Vi would come to refer to as the dreaded event.
