"Jacob never made it a habit to look into people's eyes. Since his first shift he's always been nervous of Imprinting on someone, on anyone; it didn't matter if they were a friend or a stranger. He was just too young, he felt, to reasonably be confident being one part of a whole soul. He barely felt confident being himself most days.
So, he avoided eye contact. Easy enough most days. People usually don't even notice; and the few who did just thought it was a new, harmless little quirk, though odd. The age old fanfic trope of 'Jacob Imprints on Edward' and treated seriously. The timeline of it all is fudged so I could have fun.
