    Three months after the New Year, Avery is trying his best to move on and keep living his life. He really is. That is, until he finds that the World that should no longer exist isn't done with him, and he gets the opportunity to try and be better. Again, and again, and again.

    He knows he's walking into a trap. But he knew that the first time, too, and id it didn't stop him back then, it sure as hell isn't stopping him now.

    With his future– and the future of the entire world– hanging on his ability to maneuver both Derek's self-sacrificial tendencies and the King's manipulations, he just has to hope that given infinite attempts, his ability to hinge everything on a last-minute solution will be enough to pay the favor back.

    Somewhere not too far from him, a forgotten book resurfaces.

    Usually, it's cold.

    First the horror of the realization. Then the mental chide for not noticing it before. Then comes the brief stage of frantic searching for a solution, the human instinct of survival flaring up brighter than the screen he's looking at.

    Then regret and heartache crash into him. A voice follows them, deep and raspy, and before he knows it, every emotion gets replaced by another painfully obvious one: Defeat.

    But now, it's not cold. Derek Hutchins does not feel too much. Maybe he has felt so much that his nerves have given up. All he can focus on now is the process of dying.

    Somewhere achingly near, a lone young man grieves for a life he's never known, because grief seems easy. Almost all of its stages are easy, except one. Acceptance, however, isn't.

    Well, now what? If anything, he felt out of place here. He didn’t pray as much these days, not much when he was a kid, even less now. What would he pray for anyways? For guidance? For safety? Maybe…

    Awkwardly, he pressed his hands together.

    “I uh— don’t know how I’m supposed to start these but… Can you send me a sign that Derek is okay? I don’t know where he is— I don’t even know if he’s still alive… What if he’s in pain? I-I wouldn’t forgive myself if he was…”

    “Please… it hurts to think that he’s out there suffering while I’m here sitting just fine. I can’t even sleep anymore! I… I can’t…” Tears started rolling down Avery’s cheeks. Here he was, begging for something almost impossible. “Please, I…” He couldn’t even speak anymore, he was too caught up sobbing about this man he’d never met. His head in his hands as he broke down for the first time since what happened.
