    Soulmarks only activated once both parties were born and capable of thought. This could only mean that whoever sat on the other end of this newly woken bond was an infant. Unacceptable. He would find his soulmate, and eliminate them, before they had the chance to ruin everything.

    Meanwhile, Harry Potter grows up in peace, surrounded by alive, doting parents and friends.
    Only, he has a soulmate who—going by nearly two decades of arm messages consisting of very evil thoughts, the occasional cockney, and sometimes unintelligible scribbles—may or may not be a Dark Lord.

    Soulmate AU in which everyone has soulmarks in the form of words that appear on their arm each day, depicting a stray thought their soulmate has had that day.

    “Don’t you see, Harry? We’re the same, you and I,” Tom whispers softly, grabbing Harry’s wrist. Tom strokes the thin skin, causing Harry to look at him. If he could, Tom would pluck those eyes out so they wouldn’t look at anyone else.

    “No, I don’t think so,” Harry protests. The boy’s eyes stray to the discarded stones, the stones Tom almost used to kill those children. Displeasure seers through him at the lack of attention. Tom taps his pulse point with his thumb, coaxing Harry’s eyes back to him.

    “Of course we are, and we need each other.” It’s a lie, but it comes out more sincere than Tom ever imagined. Harry inclines his head, sizing up the truth of Tom’s declaration for himself.

    “Okay, sure,” the boy decides suddenly.

    Harry Potter was his.

    Tom Riddle meets Harry Potter at Wool's Orphanage where he immediately becomes a thorn in his side. Upon the discovery that Harry was like him, Tom decides he cannot and will not let Harry go. Even Harry's endless complaints and inevitable devastation if he ever found out Tom's plans cannot stop him from pursuing political domination.

    It had once read Harry Potter, but Tom had crossed it out and replaced it with his own surname instead. Beside Harry’s name, it was perhaps the only time he thought his surname looked good. Perhaps, too, the only time he did not hate it.

    Or: Something strange was going on with Harry, and Tom intended to find out what.
