It must have been the right thing to say for Sara seemed to relax. However, Shane couldn’t help but laugh.
“Riiiiiiight, Ryan Bergara died in a house fire.”
She seemed very concerned about his laughter. Maybe she was right to be, for he was discovering it was very difficult to breathe and laugh at the same time. At least the searing pain in his lungs distracted from the feel of her hand back on his arm.While staying overnight at a 'haunted' house, Shane and Ryan are trapped in a horrible fire and Ryan doesn't make it. Or maybe he does. Shane isn't willing to give up on him just yet.

There’s nothing particularly emotional about the zoom call they’re on and Shane curses his body for so easily being affected by Ryan’s charm. Ryan’s not doing anything different than normal, but he doesn’t have to. Sometimes Shane just gets hit with a wave of Ryan Feelings and he has to take a moment to breathe before he’s pulled under completely. He knows somewhere deep within himself, that if that happens, he might never resurface.

It was really just his luck that a hulking monster lumbered out of the woods and directly onto his driveway. Just his luck that he threw enough parties when his parents were gone that the neighbors had long tuned out any noise that came from his yard. Just a nice cherry on top of the fucking cake that, even if anyone did hear him screaming when claws tangled in his jacket and pulled, Steve honestly wasn’t sure they’d have cared enough to bother anyway.

Summary
The color drains completely from Robin's cheeks. “Holy,” she breathes, and her eyes find his. “Y-you’re telling the truth? You’re really a genie?”
“A Jinn,” Steve corrects, but his hands are shaking.
She flips through the contract, her brow furrowing the more she reads. She works her way slowly through the restrictions and stops on the third page. Her eyes go back to the top, disbelief growing with each word.
“Fuck,” Robin gasps, and her wide eyes find his. “A child? They chose for you to be a human child?”
He nods, throat in knots.
“So,” she fumbles. “You’ve been serving the Harringtons for eighteen years?”
“Pretty much.”
“Jesus.”

Or, eighteen years ago, the Harringtons walked out of Yellowstone Park with a newborn and the promise of ten wishes all bundled in one. Sixteen years later, Steve picks up a bat, restrictions be damned.
