Summary
A reading the books fic!! There's really nothing more to say about it. I'm trying to put as much of a plot into it as I can though. It's totally ToA canon compliant. It's mostly canon compliant for the Sun and the Star as well, but I will be changing some parts.

Maomao couldn’t see faces. She knew what they looked like; eyes, noses, mouths - but as a whole, she just… couldn’t comprehend them. They blurred together, got all muddled and made her eyes ache. Her papa couldn't either, so he visualized something else instead - board game pieces. That never worked for her though, her salvation coming in the form of a book from her great uncle: a nature encyclopedia. She started seeing flowers instead of faces.

Summary
The madam of the Verdigris House placed a small package between herself and Maomao.
“Hello, Granny.” Maomao waited a moment to see if the older woman would speak, then opened the parcel. She pulled at the strings until it opened, revealing beautiful orange fabric with green details. Maomao lifted it and identified it as a sleeveless dress. The hem had little red flowers, and the sash was dark green. The color made her think of an orange fruit with its vibrancy. “A dress,” Maomao noted aloud.
“I’m sure you can guess what this is for.” The woman put an elbow on the table between them. “I’m officially employing you as a courtesan.”

An AU in which Maomao lives at the Verdigris house as a servant and apothecary. After turning seventeen, the old lady decides to make her a courtesan.
