Summary
THIS IS NOT A FIC. It's an essay. I didn't know where to post, but really wanted to work through my thoughts on how TGCF is a successful plot-driven story and the reason it works in comparison to the reason why MDZS works as a character-driven story.
Yes, I was an English major in college. Yes, I did consider writing this like an actual literary paper, but then it'd be excruciatingly boring to read, and I'd also have to cite TGCF pages and I was not about to do that.
[OR: an essay on why I really like TGCF even though its characters are static as hell]

Summary
"That's true," Hua Cheng conceded, and that piercing gaze returned to Xie Lian. "Normally a forfeit would be named before any dice are rolled. Your prize we know - if you win, you get to take that one home, to do whatever you wish with. But what can gege offer if I win?"
What could he bet…?
Xie Lian couldn't really think of anything. Spiritual energy he didn't have enough of to spare any, years of his life he didn't know how many he ought to offer, and in terms of material wealth, he was well and truly broke… While ruminating on this problem he began chewing on his lip, absent-mindedly worrying it between his teeth in deep contemplation.
"How about a kiss, gege?"
In the Gambler's Den, Xie Lian bets a kiss - and loses.
Then he loses again. And again. And again.

Summary
“Oh yeah? That’s a lot of soup, Granduncle! What are you going to put in it?”
Xie Lian beamed at them. “Ah, it’s a special recipe.” At that, he took the rock from his sleeve. “It’s called ‘stone soup’. All you have to do is take a magic rock just like this-” He made a show of displaying the rock to each ghost. “-And then you put it in a pot full of river water and let it simmer for a few shichen. It’s quite a delicious soup!”
The ghosts stared at him with no lack of skepticism. But Xie Lian kept up his expression, hopping up to the rim of the pot and plunking the stone in. From his perch, he hollered:
“Feel free to come by when it’s done! I’m making a lot, so there should be enough for anyone who wants it! Oh, and, you know, it might just need a little garnish, so if there’s anything you think you want to put in, feel free to bring it, and I’d be happy to add it!”
