Josie was not talented at violence. Not really. Whatever battlefield magic had been granted to her out there on the forty yard line, it had quickly disappeared by the time she woke up the next morning. She'd tested this theory out pretty thoroughly (thus her current black eye) and it held up.
As the specter of graduation looms, Josie can't face the thought of losing Isabel. Whatever she has to do, she'll do it.

He laughs. There are miles and walls between you, to say nothing of time, but you know that laugh. You know that he’s scratching his jaw with his knuckles, turning away from the world and towards the sound of your voice, shoulders rising half an inch. Private, a little defensive. He never likes taking personal calls at work where he can be overheard, but it’s been a couple years since you’ve talked to each other. He must have missed you. That accounts for his reply.
“One-night stand seems kind of inaccurate, don’t you think?”

There’s a long island of countertop, the closest end perfectly clean and white under overhead light, the opposite end fading into the shadows. Leaning on the middle of the counter is Luca, full weight on both forearms. Fingers interlaced. If you knew him a little less, you'd say he was just finishing prayer or just beginning. His eyes are open, focused on nothing. His phone is on the counter by his elbow, dark, asleep. The whole world asleep. His back one curve, contained and coiled.

As you walk towards him, he stands up. Not wary, but collected, ready for anything. His lips part like he’s got something to say, and you can’t have that. Whatever it is, you don’t think you want to hear it. He’s before you now, and in the split second before the first syllable can slide out of his mouth, you slip your hand between his shirt and his trousers, grip the canvas hard, and tug towards you a little.
The trick is not to try and read his eyes. They’re near black and bottomless. Then there’s the rest of his face, stubble, scattering of scabs at his temple, shadows that cling to his jaw like they love him: just let the raw beauty cut into you, just stand there and take it as the warmth of him bleeds through his shirt and into your knuckles. Hold that gaze.
“I always obey orders,” you say. The door might be locked, but he’s got a way out. All it’d take is a word.
