Camilo started the story in his most dramatic voice; “This is the story of how Mirabel died.”
Mirabel slapped Camilo’s arm. “Don’t scare them,” she scolded and turned to the kids with a reassuring smile. “Don’t worry!” she said brightly. “It’s actually a very fun story and, truth is, it’s not even really mine- it’s mostly Tio Bruno’s story.”

Mirabel just wanted to make her family proud. So, when her lost uncle's crown is stolen, she races to get it back. She doesn't expect to find a man hiding in a tower- a man who seems all too familiar.
Bruno's spent the last forty-five years hiding from those who would use him for his gift of prophecy. He doesn't expect a girl to burst into his tower. A girl who may be able to help him reach the mysterious floating lights he's wanted to see all his life.
So they strike a deal: Mirabel will bring him to see the lanterns and "Oscar" will tell her where he hid the crown.
Stealing back your uncle's crown from some thieves? No biggie! Accidentally finding said uncle hidden in a tower by a witch? Okay, maybe that one's a big deal after all.

Summary
Bruno Madrigal tried to make it work. He had figured that it would all just fall into place like a puzzle, with him being one of the many pieces.
He worked for months on the casita, helping to the best of his ability to fix what had been lost.
Despite hating his gift, he helped lay the foundation of the home. He lifted bricks and laid stone, working for hours upon hours to restore his family's casita.
Finally, after months of work, they had done it.
Not only that, but Mirabel- his amazing sobrina- restored more than just the door its knob.
She restored their abilities...That's when he knew nothing would change.
For so long he had hoped that he could change and become the son that Alma had always wanted... But in the end, he was just an extra puzzle piece.The rest of his puzzle was nowhere in sight, leaving him to try and find a place to fit without harming the other pieces.
Because, God, he didn't want to hurt those other pieces.

One day Bruno sees a vision of Encanto burning with the source of the danger stemming from outside Encanto’s protective mountains. It wasn’t until Bruno saw Mirabel’s undecided future that he was finally pushed to face the omen.

In an effort to slowly integrate back into the community of Encanto, he returns to one of his pre-hiding habits, reading at Café de Libros, a combination shop, café, and bibliotheca for the town run by Elena Pascual, an assertive 30 something with an adventurous streak, a deep love for books and her inherited businesses, and an unfiltered temper. The two strike up a long suspected romance thanks to the interference a butcher and a parrot, but soon Alma's dislike of Elena starts trouble for the lovers. Things only get worse when the cruelty of a jilted suitor brings violence to the community the likes of which haven't been seen for fifty years.
