John MacTavish had always hoped that there were real magic in the world. He had been raised on his grandparents’ tales of the fair folk, selkies, ghosts and haunted castles. He had been taught never to cross under a ladder, to be wary of people clad all in green and to always leave white bread out on midsummer night, and he had spend his pre-teen years hunting for browines and pixies in the fields around his grandparents’ farm.
It wasn’t until he had joined the army and seen exactly how cruel the world could be that he had truly stopped believing. And his team-mates, his friends, the men he trusted more than anyone, had known all along. And they hadn’t told him.

“Would you come with me?” Simon asks quietly.
“Where?”
“Back out to sea.”
A sharp needle of pain zips up Johnny’s earlobe at his words. He winces, features pinching, but he doesn’t wrench himself away like he would have done before. Johnny lets Simon hold him, leans into the familiar chill of his fingers, hoping it’ll chase away the throbbing pain.
Johnny laughs through it. “I doubt yer captain would be all that welcomin’ of a siren aboard his Jolly Roger.”
The crease between Simon’s brows smooths out. “But if he was?”
Johnny smiles sadly, watching the way Simon’s eyes glint with that pirate greed. That hunger.
Simon is a fool. A sweet, kindhearted, gentle fool of a man and a shitty excuse for a pirate. The thought makes Johnny’s heart clench painfully in his chest.
“Aye,” Johnny says, meeting Simon’s eyes. “I would.”
OR: The countless times Johnny unknowingly aids a pirate captain, and one time he saves him.

Ghost lets himself be pulled up slightly, his hand just as steady on Soap's thigh. "That what you need, Johnny?" he asks, licking his lips behind the balaclava. Soap’s eyes drop to his mouth, flick back up. "You wanna draw blood? Be in control?"
"Lt–" Soap starts, lips parted on a rough exhale. A plea or a warning, Ghost can't tell. He's too focused on the way Soap's pupils dilate, and the way the edge of the knife digs into the fabric at his throat.
