There was a trail of Qifrey’s blood from the entrance to the door the doctor had disappeared through.
Luckily, he didn’t have long to stand there, numb. The girls appeared moments later.
Olly swallowed, hating that he needed to ask questions from them right now, but also desperately needing to know how yet another test had gone so sideways. He cleared his throat, getting the attention of all four apprentices, and eloquently managed to ask, “…what happened?”

Qifrey and Olruggio figure out what life looks like after the silverwood seed is gone. Fair warning, it starts with a good amount of angst but moves into lots of comfort. Full of yearning all the way through.
You definitely don't have to read the earlier bits in the series - it's all just a series of Olruggio and Qifrey yearning.

Summary
Beldaruit and Qifrey - and so naturally also Olruggio - over the years in the Great Hall. Also, for any interested parties, the middle scene is Qifrey coming home after the Tower of Tomes and all that entails. If that means nothing to you, I would not read this.

“Exactly.” Beldaruit sounds softer when he says, “kisses are a sign that two people are very close, or are interested in becoming very close. A parent might kiss their child on the head to soothe them, or the cheek to make them laugh. A friend, too, might kiss a cheek as a sign of affection.”
“Oh, so like Olly?” Qifrey brightens a little. It doesn’t sound so bad being that close to Olly, although the lips bit still sounds pretty disgusting.

Qifrey had noticed Olruggio’s voice changing over the last several months, losing its scratchy boyish quality and deepening, but feeling it rumble against his chest and stomach was simply Bad News. He realized his eyebrows and eye were scrunched tight enough that he would give himself a headache, and he forced his eye open. Past the mop of Olly’s hair were Alaira’s grey eyes, alight with mischief and peering down at him. She could clearly read every thought in his head right now and smirked at his peril. At least she was here to sour the mood. He might just survive this!

She poorly covered her growing grin, "Ah, you know—Run of the mill." Glaring at her, she gave in and braced for any possible impact, be it verbal or even magical, "Some would say—or so I heard—that you guys are going out together at night to make up for lack of privacy in the Halls."

Women in the dining hall would send Olly secret little smiles. The braver sort of witch would fall into step beside him and ask about Silver Eve, or push for earnest advice on their own personal contraptions - and show their appreciation by quietly asking him out for a drink. Handsome shopkeepers would lean forward across their counters full of wares and wink.
Qifrey witnessed these valiant attempts firsthand, often from steps away, as if he didn’t exist. He filed each exchange away, hands clasped neatly in front of him, his face a mask of mild politeness.

Qifrey’s formal robes were a piece of art in their own right. Bankrolled by Beldaruit as a final graduation gift, they were a pale smoke, nearly white, and from what Olruggio could remember the golden embroidery was a sight to see. It vined along the bottom hem and wrapped organically around his throat, and when Olly had seen them for the first time he hadn’t known what to say. Qifrey had stepped forward to speak to him and he’d simply stared until gently reminded that he was still, in fact, capable of speech.
(Truthfully, just an elaborate set piece to put both dads in formal robes for an evening.)
