She reaches over and gently lays a hand over his head, ignoring his panicked flinch. His hair is softer than hers, and she doubts he does anything for it. She keeps her hand flat atop his hair, but there’s a brief impulse to yank that she buries.
“All will be well,” she says, knowingly. Skull will have the finest of clothes and indulgences. He will have the ear of some of the most powerful people on the planet. He will have luxury and love (and more sex) than he ever dreamed of.
All he has to do is stay under their watchful eye, to ensure that their precious Cloud doesn’t drift too far. All he has to do is that. It seems a fair price.

Kusuke imagines a little Warp-cat popping up over his brother’s shoulder: “Yeah, why don’t you do that thing that everyone’s always telling you not to do because it’s morally wrong and also would bring you no joy because you don’t want to do it and also would actively impede your efforts to tie yourself to normality? Why aren’t you doing that?”
It’s the stupidest question he’s ever heard. Only a monster would take over the world. Kusuo, who is a god, already owns the world. He doesn’t need to take over anything.
