Jan Van Eck had kept it under the radar, but the demjin known as Kaz Brekker found his way. There had been an incident with his son. Wylan Van Eck, who now needed a guard to follow him around, and make sure he wasn't alone for the next month. He didn't say what it was, and Matthias wasn't sure if he even knew what happened himself. But after being fresh out of Hellgate, he was the perfect choice. That, and Van Eck was buying up jurda farms, normally that wouldn't seem odd but the fact it was on a separate account made Kaz wonder. It was the perfect plan. Play guard for a month. Gather all the information, then leave. If only he hadn't grown attached to the boy.

After Kaz spills Wylan's secrets to the rest of the crows without a care in the world, his identity is revealed. It becomes clear to Wylan what Kaz is planning, and if he thinks Wylan makes for good insurance, then he's dooming them all to death. Wylan can't let his new family get killed because of Kaz's arrogance.
