    The prologue picks up mid-book 6, but rather than Brad posting the video to Twitter he sends it directly to the Montreal Metros. In this universe, Shane and Ilya are not outed to the world, but Shane is still kicked off the Metros team and transfers to Ottawa.

    This fic follows Shane and Ilyas first year as teammates, settling into their lives together after getting secretly married over the summer. In this timeline, Shane learns to heal from the wounds of being outed to his team, Shane and Ilya get to ease into being a full-time couple before being thrust into the spotlight, and they get to navigate coming out on their own terms.

    After a decade of the world being too hard on them, I just really wanted my favorite husbands to find a soft place to land. While the road is still long and difficult, this AU is all about putting them back in control of how they want the world to see them. It also gives so many more hilarious opportunities to watch other characters react to them coming out.

    Shane knows the plan to wait to come out until they retire isn't ideal, but he doesn't have a better one. He thinks that he and Ilya can make it work, until his mom points out how long they will have to live their lives in the shadows.

    But once he realizes that, he immediately knows that he can't come out. It would ruin his legacy.

    He's pretty sure that's why he doesn't want to come out. No other reason. Right?

    He is sure that's all it is until Ilya asks him if he would be safe if he came out. And he can't answer.

I mean, I-I was always trying to set you up with Jackie’s friends, you could’ve told me then.” The pain in Hayden’s voice is palpable, but Shane can’t seem to care. Panic is slowly bubbling in his stomach. He feels his face drain of color.
    “I-I posted something last night?” He whispers.
    Hayden’s eyes widen, and he turns, if possible, even paler. “You… don’t remember?”"

    Shane accidentally comes out publicly while blackout drunk. Ilya comforts him and confessions ensue. Shortly after, Shane starts getting hit on by men everywhere. Online, by fans, even by the goddamn paparazzi. Ilya hates it.

    Shane goes to Tampa. The next morning, Troy Barrett receives a text from Ilya:

    “Bringing boyfriend to breakfast. Tell team to be not weird.”

    The Centaurs are, unsurprisingly, weird about it but become the best support system they could ask for as Shane and Ilya navigate the choice to fully begin their lives together and love each other out loud.
