She likes it this way.
And besides, it means that she can notice the exact moment her hair stands on end—the exact second that a surge of adrenaline rushes through her veins and makes her heart skip when out of the blue there’s a soft whisper by her ear.

Sofia holds Nell’s gaze for what feels like an eternity before a flash of something not unlike stubbornness replaces her surprise.
“Tomorrow isn’t here yet,” she says decidedly, lacing their fingers together.

“That ain’t an option.” Nell’s reply is immediate and insistent. She’s never heard a more absurd idea, and the stubborn words are out of her mouth before she even has a chance to think them through. “You can’t be anyone else’s problem.”
“No?” Sofia says, a hint of a vexing smile gracing her lips. “And why’s that?”
The thought of it is so suddenly overwhelming that Nell sees red.
“Because you’re my problem.”
