“Annabeth…” Percy stuttered. He couldn’t quite read the look she sent him before turning to find a chair to pull up to the table. “What are you doing here?”
“Same as you, I presume,” Annabeth answered as she sat down. “Will told me I could find Nico here.”
“I wasn’t trying to—”
“Save it, Percy,” Annabeth said, not a snap, but firm. She just seemed tired more than anything. “I told you that I know you.” She reached over and grabbed one of his hands and held on tightly as she turned back to Nico. “Is there a good way in and out of Tartarus?”
Nico hesitated, like he hadn’t expected Percy to call his bluff and therefore hadn't anticipated actually having this conversation. “It’s Tartarus. There’re no good ways in, and certainly not out.” Then he grimaced. “There are better ways, though…”

Percy struggles with dreams of Alia reformed in Tartarus and Annabeth has to decide whether she's willing to risk Tartarus or risk watching Percy fade. There's more than one way for a flaw to be fatal.

Sometimes, Annabeth wonders if some of the Styx was left behind in Percy's bloodstream. It burned away all but a small part of his humanity tucked happily away on his back and yet, it still threatens what is left. It molded him into a perfect weapon the way metal is formed into a perfect handle for a gun. She thinks of how his jaw sets right before he lunges into battle, his teeth glinting like an animal. Somehow, did that poisoned river replace his bones with gunmetal? Did it sharpen his instincts similar to a wolf's teeth?
There's so many heroes in this world and she's exhausted by the fact that he seems to be the top pick every single time. One day, she's worried that there will be a quest that he'll never return from. She's selfish and wants to keep him to herself--to keep him soft and human.
