    Summary

Shane approaches the door where Ilya is playing with Anya on the bed. He doesn’t say anything, he just stands in the doorway, phone hanging limply in his hand and the colour has drained from his face completely.

    “What is wrong, Shane?”

Shane looks down at his phone. His eyebrows have fallen in confusion, but it’s the look in his eyes that makes Ilya’s stomach drop.

“Um, I think you need to read these”

“Life has a way of surprising you, she muses. With unknown trusts, shitty fathers and family funerals.”

    . ݁₊ ⊹ . ݁꒰ঌ·✦·໒꒱ ݁ . ⊹ ₊ ݁. •

When Anastasia Irina Rozanova first met her uncle at her grandfather’s funeral, it was as if her whole life had been turned upside down.

In the short but meaningful conversation they’d had, kindness hadn’t been a privilege, but a normalcy. The right to speak hadn’t been a reward, but awaited. Voicing her thoughts hadn’t been condemning, but freeing.

The way her uncle carried himself wasn’t at all what Nastya thought was expected, even allowed, in her family. As such, she ended up carrying his words in her heart almost a decade later, fueling her desperation for freedom.

Between her father’s abusive behavior and Russia’s unjust laws condemning her very existence, she had quickly grown to learn how hard that would be to achieve. Still, after pouring all her blood, sweat, and tears into earning an Ottawa scholarship, she’s now closer to her goal than ever.

Then, unexpectedly, she has to attend another funeral.

    Summary

An untranslatable Russian word - Vladimir Nabokov describes it best: "No single word in English renders all the shades of toska. At its deepest and most painful, it is a sensation of great spiritual anguish, often without any specific cause. At less morbid levels it is a dull ache of the soul, a longing with nothing to long for, a sick pinning, a vague restlessness, mental throes, yearning. In particular cases it may be the desire for somebody or something specific, nostalgia, love-sickness. At the lowest level it grades into ennui boredom."

    ***

Irina Rozanova missed Russia. The cold bit her skin with an addicting kind of pain, one that was dulled by cigarettes and sharpened again with hunger pains as her father, Andrei Rozanov, again lost his money to coke. Canada was fine. She was shipped down to the continent by CPS after they found out about her homelife. She was to live with her closest kin. Her Uncles, Shane and Ilya, were always kind and made sure there was food on the table after her dreaded Hockey practice with that bitch Ruby Pike. Irina was grateful, it was more than she could as for at home in Russia from her own father, but she wished she was happier.

    Summary

Ilya Rozanov was 19 when Ekaterina was born. Her first memories date back to when she was 4. When he was home, he would spend as much time with her as he could. He would always take her to the park, play with her, and sing her to sleep when he could. He saw the way her parents would ignore her unless people were around who would look down on them. He wanted her to have a somewhat decent childhood, so he did all he could when he was around.
She was 8 when Ilya left, never coming back
He was her safe space until he wasn't.
Ekaterina learns that he is gone, never to return. Or so she thinks.

This is EKaterina's story of love, hate, growth, and stregnth.

    Summary

Ilya doesn’t know what he expected when Katya called him, but this certainly isn’t it.

    A daughter.

His eighteen-year-old niece has a toddler.

It’s not just Mila’s existence, although that in and of itself is a surprise to say the least, but it is everything about the two of them.

Mila is silent, eyes wide and searching. She hasn’t uttered a single word.

Katya responds when spoken to, quietly, politely. Scared.

Or: Ilya Rozanov's niece turns eighteen, and with the money from her trust, she flees to Canada with her toddler in tow.
