His mother’s eyes darken with weariness Shane recognizes instinctually, a grief separate but not wholly unlike his own. A tear makes its way down her cheek, but Shane’s stay put, stubborn, cradled in his lashline like if he doesn’t cry, maybe none of this is as bad as he thinks it is.
“Just—I just have to ask,” she says. Her voice lowers to a whisper, that ever-steady corner of her mouth wavering as her palm envelopes his cheek. “How long have you been hurting?”

Given everything, Shane allows a tiny hum of agreement. And then he waves for his men to not lower their weapons, but at least their temptation to fire. “Under decree of the statute made in the fourteenth year of the reign of King Louis the Fourteenth, all and every persons whatsoever hereby declared to be principal pirates, felons and robbers—”
Rozanov lets out a loud, bored sounding noise that interrupts him. “Yes, Hollander, shall suffer pains of loss of life and goods and chattels. I have read it.” The hands that had remained at his side move suddenly, the men of the Voyageur flinching and arming their pistols in response, but only to be presented to them palm up. With another of those terribly mocking grins, he crosses them at the wrists as though already shackled. “I am sorry for betaking that wicked course of life,” he cites the statute verbatim, but with very little respect. “And I have decided to change my ways. I wish now to make my mother and whichever number King you are on very proud.”
