Summary
Penelope Featherington has been wilting away on the marriage mart for six years. She has long given up her infatuation with the third Bridgerton brother, Colin. This season, she decides, will be different. Penelope has returned to the Ton with a new special set of skills that is guaranteed to ensnare a husband, potion-making. “There,” he says, and it is maddening having her behind him, unable to see his face. His voice reveals so little. “You must try to wiggle out of the dress and the petticoat whilst I remove your stays.”
“My - my stays?” she squeaks. “Surely there is no need - ”
He lays a hand upon her shoulder, and it is so hot through the gauzy cotton of her chemise. She wonders if he is not feverish too. “They are soaked through, and it is not good to have the dampness so close to your lungs. Better to have them off.”
She supposes she should argue, but she knows that it matters not if she is in her stays or her chemise or completely bare, at this point. If anyone ever found out about this, her reputation would be ruined either way.

Summary
The image of Colin so badly wounded is horrifying, and Penelope hears herself letting out a choked gasp when she finally manages to take a breath.
“Pen, hello,” Colin says from the chair near the entrance where his men have seated him, smiling through his pain. The kindness in his tone, despite how badly hurt he is, makes tears immediately spring to Penelope’s eyes. “I am fine,” he repeats, reaching with his good hand towards her.
It is not the first time Colin Bridgerton falls off a horse, but this time it is infinitely worse. His injuries not only put an early end to his travels, they also prevent him from doing barely anything. Colin is fortunate to spend his recovery at Aubrey Hall surrounded by his family and Penelope during the off-season, but soon, he gets tired of his boring reality. He is happy enough to spend time with his dear friend and family, but his brain is restless, and with that restlessness comes a memory: what was it that Penelope wanted to tell him right before he departed for his travels?
