Summary
A Peter Pan book AU. Stede has been forced to grow up and put his childish dreams away, but one night he gets a mysterious visitor that brings it all back.
Stede is dreaming.
He rarely remembers his dreams; his father would say that he spends so much of his awake life dreaming that his sleeping mind has no need to provide more material. But sometimes, a dream breaks through. This time, he’s dreaming of Neverland. It’s an old favourite, and it used to feature more heavily in his dreams when he was a child. He used to be able to see it in great detail, back then. But the map of Neverland that he holds in his mind is locked away in that box, with his Belief, safe and secure, never to be looked at. He only has a dim recollection now. It’d sharpened into focus for a short while, when Alma had gone through her pirate phase a few years ago. But she, unlike her father, had done the proper thing and left it behind as she grew.
But tonight? Tonight it’s so clear that he can smell it. There’s brine, and gunpowder, and adventure.

Stede was just about to swan through the curtain and present himself, but he freezes when he sees Ed’s face drop. This aforementioned skirmish is news he may have neglected to share with him.

Ed is an engineer aboard the Revenge, an interplanetary research vessel on a multi-year mission to study Jupiter's moon Europa. An accident requires that Ed awaken from cryostasis over six months early, and finds his only companion to be Stede, the ship's onboard AI. They develop an unconventional friendship, but is it possible to have more?
This is classic mutual pining with a sci-fi twist, inspired by all of my favorite stories about the nature of personhood.

“You–” Ed was struggling to parse what Stede was saying. “You’re playing your version of this song for me, right now? Like, in real time?”“Yes, Edward, that’s correct,” said Stede softly.
Ed’s brain momentarily seized up. He supposed it made sense that Stede was capable of learning a set of rules to do something like arrange and play a piece of music. There was something unnerving about this song, though. It felt, well–it felt organic . Reactive. Almost collaborative in a way. Ed was lost in the push and pull of it, until the last notes softly petered out.
“So, what did you think?” asked Stede. It sounded nervous again. Why the hell would someone program an anxiety response into a bot?

“Maybe you could… teach me to fish?” Stede asks, looking away only for long enough to glance coyly back at Ed out of the corner of his eye.
Ed huffs out a quiet laugh, but Stede can see a flare of interest in his gaze. “And how do you propose I do that?”
“The normal way, I assume.” Stede blinks innocently, barely failing to suppress his own smile at Ed’s immediate willingness to play along. Before Ed can reply, Stede scrambles further up the rocks, settling himself down at Ed’s back. “There.” He maneuvers himself so his legs are spread, bracketing Ed between them. “How’s this?” he murmurs in Ed’s ear as he rests a hand against Ed’s forearm, and is pleased to see goosebumps break out all down Ed’s neck at the brush of Stede’s lips against the shell of his ear.
“That’s—” Ed’s voice breaks slightly, and he tries again. “That’s good, yeah.”
