It’s an old request, from a different time. A time where they would seek each other out after nightmarish shifts; on the hospital rooftop, the parking lot, the ambulance bay; where they would embrace each other silently – a first moment of stillness after twelve hours of chaos.
But with time their hearts grew tougher and their skin roughened, and long hugs turned into brief squeezes, then into quick pats on the back or on the shoulder.

Now he can’t take the girls to the cabin up north like we promised them he would, and I obviously can’t take last minute time off so–”
“I’ll take ‘em,” Robby said before he lets himself think too much about it.
“You will?”
“You lookin’ at me like you just found out I know how to drive, Dana.”
