Nautically: The board is the sides or the decking of a ship. ‘By the board’ means an object going over the ship's side.
Unwanted Items which ‘go by the board’ could also be labeled jetsam, but for this fic it’s the Prince Zuko treatment.Because it just so happens that Ozai wants his firstborn to go by the board.

She peered suspiciously into the crate, and her worst fears were realised. The crate was packed – packed! – with vile-looking slimy lumps.
She stared at Chao in mute horror, which he apparently assumed was awe.
“Great, right? They’re called sea prunes.” His grin grew wider, and her heart sank. “And guess what?”
“What?” she asked, numbly.
“I got another six crates waiting outside! He had loads of the things!”
Sea prunes are served at Firelord Zuko's coronation feast. Some people are more enthusiastic about this than others.

Summary
Katara steals four more lessons that week. Four more boys around her age who know the forms but don’t know the desperation of a true fight. They are bad at anticipating her movements and her decisions because Katara will never have the luxury of learning the way they did. She fights dirty, not fair, and their pride doesn’t let them understand that they’re in over their heads until it’s too late.
They leave her scrapes and bruises and cuts that fuel her healing sessions. When those are done, she goes back to their suite and resumes putting together a combat bending style from stolen pieces and her experience in the wider world.

Summary
Zuko was pulled out of the ocean by Hakoda's crew. Over time, he grew on the Southern Water Tribe warriors, and they grew on him. After Hakoda requested guidance from the spirits, to help this troubled teenager, the spirits intervened...but not in the way Hakoda expected.

Summary
They say that Sozin's line are inhuman monsters.
That's not what Chief Hakoda sees when he fishes a sickly thirteen-year-old Fire Prince out of the ocean. Then the boy knocks out his guard and forces Hakoda to chase him up the main mast to stop him from setting the ship on fire, and Prince Zuko proves exactly how much of a monster he is.
Which isn't actually that much. Volume-wise.
