Summary
Salem’s forces have hit hard, and the battlefield has left more than scars. As Jaune pushes forward, every instinct and ounce of strength stretched to the breaking point, his friends watch him unravel in ways no one should have to endure alone. Each motion, each shallow breath, each strained glance shows the Rusted Knight creeping back through the Jaune they know, but he doesn’t seem to recognize himself.
They see it. They see the panic, the trauma, the weight of decades pressing down on him. And even if he won’t let them in, they resolve to stay close, to shield him when he can’t shield himself, to be the steady presence he refuses to acknowledge. Because this time, no one will let him carry it all alone.

Summary
Salem's preliminary sieges have begun, and the opening battle goes bad in a BIG way. With Jaune the only one left standing (ignoring the serious injuries he really should be getting looked at), he takes it upon himself to protect his friends while they recover in the hospital.
So what if the sand in his armor seems more like rust to him? So what if the injuries in his throat make him sound decades older than he is? So what if protecting them means sliding his mental health backwards into the Rusted Knight? It's fine. He's fine. Good thing Dr. Klein is around to make sure he doesn't have to protect them alone.
(The fic isn't as bad as the tags make it seem, all of the violence happens off screen. This is full recovery and adrenaline crash indulgence.)

Jaune Arc misses his jackalope, but conveniently Emerald has the ability to help him see his pet rabbit again, if only temporarily. After tricking people with her whole life, it's nice to be able to give something back.

Of course from Jaune’s point of view, all he can see are his friends talking behind his back, shooting him guilty looks. He knows he’s been struggling with adjusting, but he thought he’s been doing better than this.

It’s been a week since Ren’s brother returned from the dead. He’s been keeping an eye on his leader since normal life resumed.
He isn’t supposed to know as much as he is, he’s not supposed to know more than Nora, Oscar, and Emerald (and the adults) were told by team RWBY and Jaune during their debrief. But he does. It’s apparently been decades for Jaune, and from his perspective Ren has only had his evolved Semblance for a few hours, so he isn’t shocked that his leader has forgotten.
But under his intense gaze, Ren sees more than the others do. Even without his Semblance.

After his nieces and their team get back, they say that Arc is the Rusted Knight, from the story. Qrow's pretty sure that he's the only one who goes back and reads the fairy tale. His nieces' team don't, they just got a crash course. Oscar doesn't, Ozpin probably has the whole thing memorized. Ren and Nora don't, they're just happy to have their brother back. And Arc certainly doesn't need to, he just lived it. So Qrow is quite certain that he's the only one outside of the fairy tale explorers who picks up on a few details.
The poison the Rusted Knight drinks, and Arc's well known self-sacrificing tendencies. But more than that, the fact that the Rusted Knight is definitely not a child. So as the only responsible adult (how did that happen), it falls to Qrow to get some answers out of the kid.

When Oscar looks at Jaune, it feels like he’s looking in a funhouse mirror. Both boys that were thrown into a war they didn’t ask for. Both with souls too old for the bodies they’re trapped in. Fairy tale characters in their own right, mythologized and stretched to fit personas until neither of them are sure where they end and the character starts.

It wasn’t until he was standing next to a screaming-crying Nora and he could see the petals of his own grief swirling in the air where there once was a portal that he really realized what it meant to have a brother.
And now he's back, seemingly no worse for wear save the white in his hair. He's the Rusted Knight, apparently. So why does his brother seem like he's seconds away from shattering?

Saphron Cotta-Arc stands in front of a mural, looking up at her baby brother’s smiling face. It’s not the first time. It won’t be the last. A big sister grieving her baby brother and feeling not an insignificant amount of guilt about her role in his death.
The paint is cracking from the desert heat and sun-faded in places. But her brother’s eyes still catch the light. That stubborn Arc blue that never quite learned to give up. His hair is shorter than it was when he visited. He looks older. He looks like their father.
"Hey, baby bro." The mural doesn’t answer, of course. It never does. It never will.

Emerald's Semblance is all about lying, deceit. It's what allowed her to live on the streets for so long, lying and stealing to survive. Keeping her head down. People are not kind, and they are certainly not giving. Nothing is free, everything has a cost. If they can, they will take everything from you without a hint of remorse. She should know. She's a thief through and through.
That's probably why Jaune Arc baffles her so much. He gives his soul away every time he uses his Semblance. Giving it freely, healing and bolstering without a thought of what it might cost him. Even to someone he sees as his enemy. She doesn't understand it. People aren't like that. The world isn't so kind. Especially not to her.
Why then, when he and team RWBY return from the dead, is she so surprised and disturbed that it seems like his selfless giving finally took too much from him?
