Nico’s jaw drops against his will, feeling his face trying to morph into about ten different shades of red at once. (He also envisions getting on his knees if Jack calls him captain again, but unfortunately, he has a hockey game to go play.) He lets out a maniacal-sounding laugh that comes out more like a choke, practically sprinting away before he could blurt out something stupid.

The first snowfall of the year had just begun, seasonal depression had reared its ugly head with a vengeance, and one thing was absolutely certain: Jack Hughes was well and truly Fucked™. Not his normal brand of fucked, where the situation could be solved with a few self-depricating jokes and a promise to do better the next time around. Definitely not the kind of fucked that left a pleasant sort of ache in his bones, because he hadn’t had any of that kind of action since…On second thought, that was a rabbit hole he’d prefer not to go down, for the sake of his own tattered dignity.
In a perfect world, Jack would be able to pick up exactly where he left off six months ago—a self-proclaimed love expert, romance author extraordinaire, and a devoted boyfriend. Instead, he was stuck in an endless cycle of wallowing and self-pity, mending a broken heart after swearing off love completely.

Even though he felt horrible after, he couldn’t forget what a thrill it gave him when he shot the guy, to stand there and take aim. It felt good to take this tiny piece of evil and remove it from the earth.
He now had control.
