“Let’s make a deal,” he says, finally, and then Ronan looks at him, confused and wary. “There’ll be a way to renegotiate this, bargain the terms down, or at least make them clearer and more achievable. I can work on it - I think I’ve read about a few inheritance clauses like that before. But in return, you have to… you can’t do this anymore.”

Adam is the one who looks away now, because he’s not sure how he’s feeling and he doesn’t want to show it. He thinks of Ronan, bloody on the melee ground, falling. Drunk in a back alley, the sharp glint of a knife. All the other times that Adam doesn’t know about, couldn’t do anything about. All the times he’s survived thanks mostly to luck.

“No more drinking until you can barely stand and then picking up a sword. No more fights with strangers in dark alleys. Drink if you want, fight if you want, but try to have some moderation. If you keep doing things that’ll get you killed, I won’t help you. I’m not going to waste my time on a man who’s already dead.”

His words are harsh, but he doesn’t think Ronan will take this seriously if they aren’t. Still, it takes an effort to raise his eyes, look at Ronan. The expression on his face is complicated. Adam can’t read it.

“Why the fuck would you do that at all?” Ronan asks, blunt and raw. Adam doesn’t think he’s asking about the renegotiation. He’s asking about his half of the deal, the half where Adam asks him to stay safe, to stay alive.

There are a lot of things he could say, some of them true. They are friends, after all. Isn’t it obvious that Adam wants him alive and well? And for Gansey’s sake as well, their mutual best friend and prince. He needs Ronan too. Ronan has so much ahead of him, if only he can pull himself out of his spiral.

Those things are all true, and they would be a satisfactory reason. But Adam gives Ronan a secret instead, something he would never admit to anyone else. It’s a split-second decision, one that even he doesn’t quite understand.

“I don’t want to do this without you.”

This. Being Gansey’s advisor, stepping into the world of nobility and royalty, so far beyond Adam’s station. He didn’t realize it, not until he was faced with the prospect of Ronan being gone, but it’s true. Adam is strong, Adam can do this alone if he needs to, Adam can stand at Gansey’s side and do his job. But he doesn’t want to. He wants to know that he isn’t alone, that there’s at least one person in the royal palace besides Gansey who likes him, who thinks he deserves to be where he is, who will back him up if it comes down to that. Someone he can trust. Someone who will curl his lip at noble airs and mock them behind their backs - or to their faces - and make it easier for Adam to get through each day under their disapproving looks, their superior smiles when his accent slips.

This tournament has made it clear to him. It isn’t difficult, exactly, and no one is openly rude to him, not while he’s at Gansey’s side. But he sees the way they look at him, the soft whispers. He is keenly aware he does not belong. Gansey doesn’t understand, he’s born to this, he has the look and the manner. He might love ancient books and curious stories more than trade disputes and marriage contracts, but it’s still easy for him. It’s second nature - saying the right thing, doing the right thing, accepting their respect as something he’s due rather than something he must earn.

It’s not like that for Adam. It’s not like that for Ronan, either.

Ronan is looking at him. Adam can feel the weight of his gaze, and when he finally raises his eyes to meet Ronan’s, he’s not sure what he’s seeing in them. He never knows what Ronan sees when he looks at Adam, except that he knows it isn’t something he dislikes anymore, he knows they’re past that. But it’s something, and Adam feels strangely bare under Ronan’s gaze. So focused, like Adam is the only thing in the tent - in the world, maybe, in that moment - worth looking at.

Then he looks away, and Adam can breathe again

    Summary

    Bucky Barnes was cold.

He felt like he’d been cold for months now; doing nothing but experiencing one unending chill after another. He’d been cold in England, and again in Italy, and again especially in Austria – both while he was kept in an underground cell, and when he was strapped without cover to the unforgiving metal of Zola’s lab table.

But Steve… Steve Rogers was sunshine. Everything about him was warm, from his crinkly-eyed smile to his white-hot rage. Steve was Coney Island on a summer’s day; lying back on high rooftops to watch fireworks on the 4th of July; drinking stolen whiskey in his parent’s living room…

Loving Steve was a fact – simple and plain, like breathing air or bleeding red; loving Steve was soldered into his skin like a tattoo – it buzzed in his brain like its own kind of high. It was a part of who he was.

“Isn’t that weird?” Sam starts, raising an eyebrow at Bucky’s parallel self.

“Sam-“ Bucky tries to interject, looking increasingly distressed – but it’s no use.

“I mean, you third wheeling Steve and his wife out here in the middle of nowhere?” Sam finishes, and Bucky can only cover his face with his metal hand and wish the ground would swallow him whole, knowing what is coming as surely as he has ever known anything.

“Pal,” the Other Bucky replies with a smirk, holding up his flesh hand to show off a thin silver band while the real Bucky stares resolutely at the ground, “I am his wife.”

    Or

Of all the parallel universes they could have ended up in, Bucky can't think of a worse one than this - one that serves as a constant reminder of everything he's ever wanted, and everything he can't ever have.

    “You’re Jordan’s wife?”

If anyone in their town would’ve gone out looking for a foreign beauty, it would’ve been Jordie. He had an adventurer’s spirit, bold and daring. If Maja squinted at the old rope swing by the lake, she could still see the silhouette of him, leaping into the water while Kasper worried from his perch on the banks.

But Inej’s face freezes in an odd expression. “Not quite,” she says haltingly. “I’m married to his younger brother – Kaz?”

    ---

Or, the town of Lij is endlessly fascinated with the mysterious Mr. and Mrs. Rietveld each and every time they visit.

    Bookmarker's Notes

Her questions die in her throat as the house comes into view and, with it, Kaz and Genna. Jesper stops dead in his tracks, mouth agape, and Inej and Wylan stop with him instinctively. Kaz, hunched over the front gate doing something that involves a hammer, seems to sense her presence in that peculiar way of his. He glances over his shoulder half a second before she opens her mouth to call out to him.

Their eyes meet, and Inej is suddenly breathless. Every single thing she thought she would do or say leaves her mind, replaced by the warm joy of seeing his face again. It doesn't make sense - Inej has spent far longer periods away from him in the past. But that was before.

Genna is kneeling by his feet, face close to the ground and bottom in the air, examining something very closely. Kaz leans down to her, one hand braced on his good knee, speaks. Genna looks up at him. And then he points, and she looks at Inej.

The excited squeal that Genna lets out cuts something loose inside her. She drops her bag and runs.

In the next instant, Inej is on her knees in the dirt pressing kisses to Genna's fat little cheeks, her little hands, hefting the weight of her in her arms as she smacks kisses into her belly and her girl shrieks in delight. All the while she murmurs to her in jumbled Suli, words tumbling over themselves, my darling, my little precious, my very own heart.

In the background she becomes aware of a great ruckus, all flapping wings and vicious honking and the distinctive sound of Wylan yelling fuck, fucking fuck!

Twisting to look over her shoulder, Inej sees that her friend has retreated a fair distance up the track and is climbing the fence, beset by geese and still shouting obscenities. Jesper, following after and betraying no particular urgency in coming to his husband's aid, calls, “Wylan no, darling, they can fly—”

She turns back to look up at Kaz, watching the proceedings with an air of resigned indifference, and all she can think is how much she's missed him. When he glances at her, she grins up at him, gleeful. He doesn't smile back, but the way he looks at her sitting in the dust with Genna tight in her arms, like she's the most valuable thing he's ever laid eyes on, is welcome enough for now.

In the depths of his cycle, Ketterdam says, Kaz Brekker is the worst kind of monster, a koper who kills any ankopje he gets his hands on. All Inej knows for sure is that he disappears completely every six months. But now, in the confined space of the boat back from Fjerda, with Van Eck's thirty million waiting for them, their cycles have fallen into sync, and Inej is in danger of finding out just how true the rumors really are.

“Kaz,” she gasps. “Kaz, you can’t bite me.”

A pain goes through him, sharp and hard, like he’d swallowed a needle. She doesn’t want to be his, not really. Enough for this but nothing else. She doesn’t think he’s good enough for her, and she’s going to leave him.

And she’s right. Inej has killed, and lied, and stolen. But Inej is good. If it’s possible to smell like goodness, that is what is at the base of her scent. And you don’t sell something so good to such a wicked buyer. It stings, and he swallows hard, but he understands.

Maybe she’ll take her ship and she’ll go back to Ravka and meet a Suli koper and let them bite her — the thought is almost enough to make him sink his teeth in anyway. But even Dirtyhands has some honor. “I won’t,” he says stiffly, and licks her instead.

She almost slumps against him, and the vulnerable way her spine softens, the absolute way she trusts his word, is his own little fortune.

“I thought you liked it,” she says, looking offended.

“Of course I fucking liked it,” he says. The frustration is clearing his head a little. “Inej. Listen to me. What do you think whores sell?”

She huddles a little, down into her shift, into her dirty gown, and he hates it but he has to make her understand. “Their bodies.”

“No. I mean, sure, if you like, but not more than a stevedore or a seamstress. Whores — real whores, not trapped girls with no choice —” he has to stick to the point. “They sell two things. One is the act. Just the act. And the other is the illusion. Like you were saying. The illusion that someone wants them. That they’re a masterful lover.” Could any whore have done anything with the performance he’d turned in? Probably not. “Or just that their jokes are funny. That’s what they’re selling. That’s what the customers get.”

Inej is frowning, but she’s watching him, listening to him, and that’s all he needs. Inej speaks in aphorisms, in parables, in metaphors. He has to make her understand. “I don’t want the illusion. I can buy a ticket for an opera where a merchant’s boat catches fire, and maybe it’ll be cleverly done, maybe they pipe in smoke and play tricks with mirrors and flash powder, but in the end they just sweep the set and reset it for the matinee.  But the real thing is different.  You need real combustibles, you need to get around the guards, you need to have a sure path.  Real things go up in flames and when it’s done there’s ash in the water.  Something changes, can’t be undone.  Your clothes smell for weeks.  It lasts.  I want something that lasts.”

She’s still frowning, but he can see by her eyes that she’s thinking about it. “You want,” she says slowly, “the real thing. And not the illusion. What would the illusion be?”

He swallows. Is shamefully glad of his tie and his high collar. “You come back to Ketterdam once in a while. You let me touch you because you think I’ll like it and you’re being kind. You go away and never think about me.”

“I think about you.” Her eyes are far away, but in a thoughtful way, not empty like they were before. “In your letter. You said.”

She stops, and in his head he tries to page backwards through that ink-stained nightmare that he sent her. He said all kinds of things. Most of them insane. He said he wanted her to pity him. And isn’t it pity that he’s just described? He said he wanted to fuck her, and he said he wanted her to pity him, and that’s what he’s just said he doesn’t want. How can he explain? Especially like this, lying here with her tangled in a mess of clothes he put on her that she never wanted, and him with all his clothes and gloves on but his soft wet prick hanging out.

“You said,” she said, “what I said, about your armor. That you didn’t know what I meant. But this is what I meant, you know.” He stares at her, and she drops her eyes, her fingers tracing patterns on the coverlet between them. “I was afraid — I had a picture in my head, that you would — finish, and then say, now Wraith, go and climb through Mr. So-and-so’s window for me.  That I would touch you, and it would all be part of your plan, and you would be angling and scheming to get what you wanted out of me, to touch me here or there or fuck me like this or that.  Because it seemed to me that — that that would be what you’d need to feel safe.  That you would need it to be just another kind of business. Where you could play with me like a card and — and laugh at me for caring.”

His skin prickles with cold fear. Fear, because he is asking her to go and climb through a window. Because if he could have kept her with him, maybe that is what he would have wanted to do, if he could have managed it, and she’s right that it would have made him feel safe. Because she knows him so well, sees through him so exactly, and how could she ever prefer what she sees to — anyone, Suli or gadye?

Her voice is soft. “So I don’t think it’s so hard as you think. To take off your armor. And I still know who you are.” With one outstretched finger, she brushes the tip of his nose. So lightly. “You arrogant little sneak.”

“Inej.” He doesn’t know what else to say.

“Maybe we should do it a bit like your Kerch way,” she says thoughtfully. “Write down what we want. And see what we agree on.”

“Maybe.” Hasn’t he already told her what he wants? But he didn’t say it like a marriage contract. He said I want to see you, not — what would a contract term be? Companionship? Friendship? Your eyes on me at the end of the day? No. He’ll have to think. And he can’t think now. He’s so tired.

    Bookmarker's Notes

This is what I wrote in Os Alta:

I am on fire and I will never stop thinking about you and I will never stop wanting you. Even when my plans don’t have anything to do with you — even when you’re a hundred miles away on a ship and never thinking of me, I make everything about you. In secret ways, sometimes. Ways no one would ever guess. I wrote our names together on a brick and then I went at night and put the brick in the foundation of the building I was having built. You’d have to take the whole thing apart, down to the ground, to find the brick that some childish idiot scratched “Kaz & Inej” into. Someday someone’s going to kill me, and when it happens I want you to take me apart and see what’s written inside me. I can’t let anything happen to you. You could betray me in every conceivable way and I’d still never let anyone harm a hair on your head. I can’t. If you told me to get on my knees, Inej, I would, but you never will. I’m the wrong man. But you said I was handsome. I know I heard you say that. I know you knew I’d hear you make that sound. I’m on fire. I’m on fire.

The sun is up. I should go and get your tea.

That’s what I wrote. And I did go and get your tea.

    Your obedient servant.

    Summary

It’s 2008 and Draco Malfoy is a secret assassin. It's legitimate - he gets paid for it, and some higher ups in the Ministry (probably?) know he’s out there… killing people. He’s quite good, but that tracks with his dubious accounting of rights and wrongs and his penchant for self-preservation. During his downtime he does a great job of acting like a pureblood in penance... mostly by drinking and shagging his way into oblivion.

This double life helps to numb Draco to the constant feelings of shame and guilt from his formative years in which he was an utter cunt- but everything is upended when his team (assassins can have coworkers, alright?) dies in action and he does not. Suspended and forced to go to therapy, Draco is adrift.

When Hermione Granger re-enters the fray, their hateful relationship that was once fraught with swotty bickering (erm, and the occasional slur) is suddenly tense in a very different way.

How will these two come together? How often will Theo say something terribly charming? Do we hate Ron or is Ron just, meh? Oh, and what’s going on with that one murderous witch who’s out to kill them all (forgot to mention that part…)?

He deflated, all the anger and indignation collapsing back within him. His head hung low, his hand still wiping at his face.

“I lied to you,” he huffed a laugh, smiling softly.

“What do you mean?” She asked, raising an eyebrow at the sudden change in subject.

“I said I wasn’t normally like this. That was a lie. I’m a crybaby, I’m afraid. So… sorry in advance.”

Hermione laughed, “I’ve known you since you were eleven, if you’ll recall. You weren’t ever getting away with that one.”

He rolled his eyes, huffing a wet laugh in response, sniffling in a way that almost seemed comedically timed.

“Yes, well. I couldn’t be handsome, intelligent, rich, and stoic , I suppose,” Draco replied, a crooked smile on his face even as he dabbed his face with his shirt sleeve. “Can’t win them all.”

Hermione crawled over and knelt over him where he sat cross-legged on the bed. She took his face in her hands, swiping her thumbs under his eyes. He leaned into the touch, looking up to meet her eye through his lashes, shiny with tears.

His laughter faded, his lips parting in a soft, surprised gasp.

They shared several breaths like that.

“Are you going to kiss me?” he whispered finally.

“I was considering it,” she admitted.

“Shame you didn’t catch me at my best tonight, then,” he smiled softly, bringing his hand up to her cheek.

    “It’s only 4 p.m.,” she replied.

“You always get hung up on the unimportant bits,” he said with a small smile, his eyes flickering to her lips before meeting hers again.

“Do you want to kiss me?” she asked.

“What kind of question is that?” he breathed, shaking his head incredulously before surging forward to press his lips to hers.

    Summary

Healer Hermione Granger has survived war, bureaucracy, and fourteen separate fundraising galas for her experimental research at St. Mungoes. None of that prepared her for an onslaught of increasingly unhinged letters from Narcissa Malfoy.

Now she’s halfway across Romania, tasked with dragging Narcissa's dragon-hunting, dirt-streaked son back home.

“You can’t sleep like that, Granger.” He frowned. Draco’s hands pushed down firmly on her shoulders as he sat her in the small chaise in front of the mirror. His scarred, rough fingers found the sharp diamond hairpins holding her curls in place and he unclipped them one by one, painstakingly gentle. His scarred fingers lingered, a handful of her hair between them, and it was enough to make her close her eyes with the sensation of it. Then, as soon as it had happened, he was gone.

"There," he said. His voice had the same ragged quality as when he'd kissed her in the forest, the same agony and the same restraint; like she was a china doll in his hands that could smash at any moment- he wouldn't touch her unless she asked. In that second, Hermione decided something.

Perhaps Theodore Nott had been right all along.

    Fuck it.

“Draco, I’m going to sober up.”

“Please do.” With a pop of her wand, the room came sharply into focus. Hermione swivelled in the chair, turned to him with her brow furrowed, and took a breath.

    “You want me.”

    “Obviously.”

    “That won’t change?”

“You’re not that lucky, Granger.” She frowned, still unsatisfied.

“What if I asked you to get down on your knees and swear it?” Draco looked at her for a moment as if considering if she were serious.

Then, he knelt before her for the second time that day, achingly slow. Hermione was both fascinated and horrified to find that she liked him on his knees. ‘I walked through dragonfire for you’, his eyes told her, and she glanced at the bandage peeking through his shirt; the compress she’d applied to the burn on his shoulder.

It isn't often Hermione Granger does stupid things, but making up a boyfriend to avoid pity from her ex and saying she'll bring the made up man to a couple's getaway certainly could be classified as one of her stupider moments. Enter Draco Malfoy, who suggests an arrangement: they pose as a couple long enough for her to keep her pride, and for him to better the Malfoy name by dating a war heroine. What could go wrong?

    Summary

Hermione had no idea how she’d found herself here, in his bedroom, Draco’s hand running along her back to the base of her spine with the sort of possessive pressure she’d only imagined. No idea how his lips had been on hers only seconds ago.

“You’re beautiful,” he murmured against her skin, “Far too beautiful for me,”

It was a lie of course and one she could take no pride in. With her altered hair and eyes and nose, he wasn’t seeing her anyway - she was a facsimile of Hermione Granger, a new version of herself just for his benefit. One that was capable of persuading Draco Malfoy to take her to bed in a way that Hermione never could.

Hermione is sent on a secret mission, disguised as a muggle, to spy on Draco Malfoy. Things start to unravel quickly...
