Summary
Japan has spent decades building an empire, by 1931, Kiku Honda already controls Korea, has taken Taiwan, and is turning his attention toward Manchuria. As Japan's ambitions grow, so do the tensions between Kiku and the countries caught beneath his expansion, especially Korea and China.
What begins as a belief in strength, security, and the future of Japan slowly becomes something far more dangerous.
As Kiku's empire expands, he finds himself drawn closer to Germany and Italy, and eventually into a war that will consume the world. Surrounded by allies, enemies, and the consequences of his own choices, Kiku must face the reality of what Japan has done.
And when the war finally ends, Japan is left defeated.
But surrender is not the end.
With America now occupying Japan, Kiku is forced to confront the country he helped destroy, the people who suffered under his empire, and the question of whether Japan can become something different without repeating the same cruelties that brought it to ruin.
A story about imperialism, war, responsibility, and rebuilding, told through the history of Japan and the nations caught in its path.
