Sid’s trying to keep his mind on the gaggle of reporters in front of him, half-listening to everyone around him, though he can’t help but glance towards Geno when he hears his friend get the question. (The same one Sid’s expecting to get any moment now.) It’s fine. They’ve been giving the same answers for years now, every time the trade deadline looms and management again drags their feet and forgets Geno’s a legend in his own right. It’s always been the same response: Only for Pittsburgh. Always with Sid. So Sid expects nothing different —

“Are we actually doing this?” Fleury asks eagerly, shit-eating grin on his face. He watches as Sid posts a copy of the roster to a board inside the locker room.
Sid sighs. “Dumo and Rusty convinced me we have to,” he says. “For, like, charity. Or something.”
Tanger raises an eyebrow. “How does not… you know. How does that help charity?”
Dumo steps in quickly. “It raises awareness! Prostate cancer kills!”
“Ok, but we’re not telling anyone about this,” Sid rushes to say. “Like, this absolutely has to stay in the locker room, you get that, right?”
Bryan rolls his eyes. “Obviously, Croz.”
“So how does this… whatever. You all want to do this, be my guest,” Sid says.
“No, no, captain must participate too,” Geno pipes in. “How else will team bond?”
“Fine,” Sid says unhappily. “I’ll do it too.”

Sidney looked at him, unimpressed.
‘I was turning, and you hit me almost in the back.’
‘No, I was coming to you from your side and my hit was clean. Even if that’s the case, you shouldn’t turn your back when you know I’m getting close to you.’
‘So that‘s how you think, huh?’ Sidney narrowed his eyes. ‘Do whatever you want if you can get away with it?’
‘It’s hockey.’ Andrei shrugged. ‘You do whatever you can to win, right?’
‘Right.’ Sid nodded. ‘Then you shouldn’t have a problem with going to a winner’s room.’
‘I don’t.’ Andrei said, his ears flushed red. ‘But it’s different.’
‘Oh, it’s just the same.’ Sidney smiled, looking amused. ‘A bunch of jerks are trying to get you out of the game, doing the things they will get away with. Enjoy.’

Geno is having a terrible season by his standards, not by the standards of 98% of the league, but Geno has never been in the 98% he's never even been in the 2%. He belongs in the 1%. He, and everyone else knows it, so after every game that he struggles the hockey world asks why. Constantly, loudly and almost always directly but what can he say?
He can't tell them that Tommy left in the summer, that would make no sense to anyone but him, and he can't say that he hoped he'd be someone else's by now because he wears an A on his chest, he's a leader on the team, he's responsible for his team not the other way around so he'll just have to wait until someone notices.
Or
Rusty receives a text from Tom that opens his eyes to things he's been avoiding looking at for years and an afternoon of fun and flogging ensues.

This is a totally self indulgent write that kept me entertained over bye week. The idea has floated around my head, partially formed, for almost a year and I'm happy with how it turned out :D
