“Hey,” she greeted with a little smile.
He finally fixed his gaze on her eyes, and the smile he gave her, in turn, was so different from the amused smirks and exasperated grins he typically sent her way in the restaurant. It was soft and one-hundred percent relaxed, happy, but still a little nervous.
She swallowed, then laughed. “I thought it’d be even funnier if I put in a little effort on getting ready.”
Her breath caught when he tentatively reached out a hand and tucked a strand of wavy blonde hair behind her ear, a move that was so cliche it should’ve made her roll her eyes, but it didn’t. “Yeah,” he whispered. “Hilarious.”

Brad stopped. For a second, everything kind of stopped. His heart, his brain, his breath; paused. He looked at Nicole, and her eyes were darting around, looking everywhere but him, and she was pushing at her cuticles again.
Was she asking him out? Just like that? Just when Brad had finally worked up the courage to ask her? Jesus. And, fuck, her nail polish—
He grabbed her hands, once again stopping her nervous picking, and laughed. “I hate you. I was trying to ask you the same thing.”

Summary
As Bridgette starts telling her, “I am not saying that!”, Brad tries to shut down his phone. In his haste, though, he accidentally turns off silent mode, and the room is suddenly filled with sharp, loud ringing, a different tone than Nicole’s, but recognizably the sound of a phone call.
“Shit,” Brad curses under his breath, getting a harsh smack on the shoulder from Nicole as reprimand for speaking. But because of the skin-on-skin contact, it’s louder than she expects it to be, all too audible for Bridgette to hear.
Brad quickly shuts off his phone and tosses it to the end of the bed, but the damage is done, and he and Nicole can only tense as Bridgette goes quiet.
“Nicole,” Bridgette whispers into the phone conspiratorially. “Are you with someone right now?”
Nicole looks at Brad, who has panic written all over his face. The answer is obvious. Of course she’s with someone right now.
“No,” she hedges, wincing. “I’m… not with someone right now.”
