“We should get married,” Pearl said into the hush.
Marina’s eyes flew open, wide awake. She didn’t physically react past that, other than a tightening of her arms, and she gave herself a few beats to process. It was so nonchalant, so casual, that Marina didn’t want to ruin the moment. She replied in turn, trying to keep her voice steady and light:
“Yeah?”
Pearl’s hands closed around Marina’s. “Yeah. Do you want to?”
Did she want to? Was Pearl okay?
“Of course I want to.”

But, most importantly, Marina crouches behind her on Mt. Nantai and the Inkling scream-sings to an uncaring, unhearing world. Beyond them, a city larger than anything Marina’s ever seen glints in the light from the rising sun and the horizon spreads itself farther than Marina can comprehend. The Inkling’s voice is as clear as Marina thought, with a vibrato that’s well-trained and high-pitched, which would contrast nicely with Marina’s mezzo—
And there it is. The first thought that sets Marina on the track. Marina closes her eyes and listens to this Inkling girl sing louder than anything Marina’s ever heard, with complete control, and she imagines her future: she’ll charm this girl with her demo, convince her to help her, convince her to take a chance on her, and, together, they’ll make the music that Marina’s been grasping in the dark for.

Summary
Marina is having the best day of her life, and Pearl is trying very hard not to focus on the sensation of the ring pressed into the skin of her chest, held in place by the tightness of her costume and the chain around her neck. The crowd pulses in time with the drums and screams their guts out as Pearl pushes on through her rap beats, and they bring it home like always—and no one knows just how hard Pearl knocked herself into the past.
All except Marina, who grabs her hand as the stage descends and the smoke clears. They have exactly ten seconds until they’re whisked into a golf cart and rushed to the next stage, and Marina doesn’t waste them. She pulls Pearl close, presses her face into the top of her sweaty head, heaving for breath herself, and mumbles, “I can’t wait to perform with you like that for the rest of my life.”
And Pearl’s hearts seize and it’s all she can do to stop herself from proposing right there.
