Summary
“Oh.”
He snapped into his head so suddenly and violently he could feel the click in his teeth. Only one sound. Soft and very far away. But he lunged for it with carnal ferocity. He’d know that voice if it echoed to him from across the grave. The pulse of his heart in an earthquake. He’d know the warmth of his hand if he were standing on the sun.
“Are you… in there?” Martin wondered delicately “I can’t really tell.”Series

Summary
“This is a new beginning.” Martin whispered, an arm around his shoulders, careful not to touch his chest, still bandaged and painfully sore after his heart surgery “We can be whatever we want to be here.” He’d been saying it almost constantly since Jon regained consciousness. Like a mantra.
“Yeah…” he breathed. “So who do you want to be?”

Summary
An unspoken agreement reared its head as the weeks continued–As long as you were intoxicated, it didn’t count. The careful, gummy emptiness of their interactions over the last year started to fade. They allowed themselves to speak the tiniest bit freely. Permission to snap and step on toes and do more than just hold and kiss. Hands grasping in the darkness finally brushing each other. Their conversations growing baby teeth again. Even if they were clumsy or crude or sometimes cruel, all was forgiven come morning, as easy as batting an eye. And in a very tangible way, that was even more addicting than the high itself.

Summary
Martin laughed at that “What makes you think I’d want you to? Why couldn’t I just love you? Unconditionally?”
“Because there have to be conditions, you dolt!” he snapped
Martin stared at him for a long time, though it was hard to say if it was seconds or hours. It wasn’t until he pulled his fingers away and sheepishly into his lap that Jon even remembered they were there. Eventually he realized Martin wasn’t going to say anything, so the burden fell to him.

Summary
Jon watched the flames grow higher, their business crumbling to ash in real time before him, and he wanted to laugh. That he’d actually thought, for even a moment, that he was safe. That he’d felt, of all things, invincible when he’d been attacked. That he had crossed the threshold and stood now on the other side of his life. He wanted to laugh at his own stupidity and arrogance. But it died in his throat.

The fourth year, they go to court.
