“Oh, Casey,” Derek says, cautiously putting his hands on her hips. “If you meant that, you wouldn’t have been checking me out all day.” She looks so mad, putting her arms around his neck in a move that may be interpreted as attempting to murder him, or trying to pull him closer. Derek’s guessing the latter. “It’s okay. If it involves orgasms and there's thirty terms, then Casey could let herself have one orgasm every ten mastered terms, but there needs to be something to keep her on edge until then so she's learning. The goal here is to learn. Orgasms are just a pleasant bonus. So maybe she just sits on Derek's cock and can bounce for each term she gets correct. Sure, of course he'd try to ruin her Sweet Sixteen, it's Derek, but why would he do a nice thing too? He snuck into the hospital room to see her and even brought Max, who she knows he doesn't like. Derek would protest and say that he's the best of Casey's dating choices, but objectively, that's not saying much because of how much he hates the fact she was with Sam.
So it just doesn't make sense. Why is he being nice to her? Derek should've taken this as an opportunity to draw mustaches on her face (with posters she didn't make, so did he? When? Where did he find the photo? She has questions) and publicly humiliate her. Instead he was nice?(or: casey and derek fight after casey's sweet sixteen because derek was too nice and she is suspicious, and max is a shitty boyfriend. the rewrite of 3.20, "Not So Sweet 16")

The stupid keener doesn't leave his mind all through trig (which, to be fair, isn't an uncommon experience, but he's supposed to be flirting with Lynn and instead he's all zoned out, which is disgusting) and she gets even more embedded during physics. It's like Casey somehow sensed that he's trying to avoid thoughts of her and decided to ruin that plan by weaseling her way into his mind. This has to violate the Genevieve Convention, he's sure of it. (That is what it's called, right? He's not taking AP World, so this isn't something he knows off the top of his head, because he's not a fucking loser.)

Look, he's about ninety percent certain that Casey has a thing for him, at least physically. Which, duh. Even rotting corpses are attracted to Derek, it's just a fact. It's not like they even talk about each other like people with undying hatred. Even back when Casey first moved in and they did genuinely dislike each other, if Derek actually hurt Casey, he'd right it. And he wouldn't just do the right thing, he'd take about twenty extra steps.
Take Klutzilla, for example. A funny nickname that apparently turned into bullying. Whatever, Marti thinks it's dumb. But still. All Derek had to do was tell people to piss off. Instead, he did the unthinkable: publicly acknowledged Casey as his stepsister. Dad and Nora were so happy after that, thinking that they'd finally be siblings.
And, on Casey's side, the defense of Derek from Icky Vicki. After they made out, Vicki really wanted a relationship of some kind, which made Marti very deeply confused. The whole situation was weird; Vicki and Derek should've never made out in the first place. But Vicki didn't see it like that; she wanted Derek and Casey, for some reason, convinced Vicki that not only was Derek repulsive, but he also hates women.(or: dasey through the mcturi's povs, and their coming out as a couple.)
