This scene so perfectly characterized each of them:
“And Horatio, rocking against the cradle of Archie’s loins, suddenly knows what it is that men do to each other, and he suddenly knows –” […]
Of course Horatio has this realization at the worst possible moment, but he also wouldn’t be himself if his brain didn’t draw the conclusion of Simpson’s actions the second he had all relevant information/experience.
““Don’t you dare compare yourself to him, you are nothing like him.” Archie’s voice is rough as though every word is being ripped out of his throat and pains him, but his eyes are like steel.“
Archie is both in a place where he is secure enough in his own desire and agency to work through this massive trigger and he knows Horatio well enough to immediately recognize the way that he will find a way to spiral in self-deprecation.
