This is so amazing. I love the beautiful characterizations and the slowly built intimacy and also this is just all-around stellar writing. You show the inner landscapes of the characters so well, like Matt here is fantastic: “I am trying to do the right thing,” he hisses because he’ll be damned if he yells first. And maybe he’s not on their level, when it comes to sacrifice, maybe he has no right to any of what he’s giving up, but he would like a little fucking credit for trying to do it gracefully anyway.
And it is one of my favorite things when authors add interesting descriptive background knowledge if that makes sense, like the bits about the crab's articulated joints and shark's two-chambered heart here: Matt can hear things in the water - swooping whistles and clicks he thinks must be dolphins, echoing from chamber to chamber, honking chattering penguins, the articulated joints of crabs, the rush of a squid propelling itself rapidly away from a shark’s slow two-chambered heart. It makes this really lyrical and adds something particularly cool to the description and to Matt's perception.
I feel like I didn't articulate this compliment well.. but I guess what I mean to say is that you articulated this story flawlessly. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much! I think I understand what you mean - I love those little details too, lol. I LOVE characterization and I love the idea of slow build but I'd never pulled it off step-by-step before, so it means so much that you liked those parts! <3
