Kaveh's scarlet eyes studied him for a moment, still holding his cup in a ritualistic manner. “In the old warrior rites,” he explained, “to offer someone a bottle of Xocoatl was how warriors pledged themselves to someone. It was more than a simple gift, but a symbol of your intention of binding your souls together.”
Alhaitham cleared his throat. “So, it was something akin to a betrothal gift?”
Kaveh considered the question for a moment, then nodded. “In human terms, I suppose that’s about right,” he conceded. “Sharing the drink with each other just like we did meant to choose each other as life partners.”
While searching for the truth behind the mysterious disappearances in Avidya Forest, Alhaitham ends up betrothed to an ancient deity.

Summary
The little briefcase whirs slowly to life. She gives a low, sluggish chirp at Kaveh’s approach. He doesn’t smile. Instead, his fingers trail across the seams of her casing, checking each latch and joint with unusual severity.
Alhaitham closes the book, marking his page. “What’s wrong with her?”
Kaveh startles slightly, as though he hasn’t realized he’s being watched. His mouth opens, irritation flickering there—ready to scold, no doubt, for prying after this morning’s quarrel—but then he sighs, rubbing at his temple.
“She’s been… off.” He mutters the word like it doesn’t quite fit. “This morning she was sluggish. Commands lagging. Like she couldn’t keep up with me. She’s not supposed to do that.”
Mehrak starts malfunctioning at random intervals, and Alhaitham and Kaveh are determined to figure out why.

Sweatpants. A (hopefully clean) t-shirt. Throw in half a tub of pineapple ice cream and the newest season of Real Housewives of Mondstadt. This was often how Kaveh, as a single incubus, preferred to spent his evenings. Recently he’d even gotten attached to his new physical form—he’d always appreciated blondes, so he felt pretty. And tall. He’d made himself tall and was very proud of that choice. Really, if you were to ask him, Kaveh would have said he was very attractive.
And yet, here he was, spending another night alone. He was never invited out to parties anymore, demonic or otherwise. Humans never summoned him (aside from teenagers with mediocre salt circles in someone’s living room). So Kaveh spent his evenings, definitely not in some beautiful young human’s bed, doing what he was made for…
Right. He was fine. Sure.

Summary
Alhaitham finds Kaveh sleeping in his office and decides to have his way with him.
“You can do anything you want to me when I’m sleeping,” Kaveh told him out of the blue as they lay lounging on one of the divans in their sitting room. He lifts his head from Alhaitham’s chest and turns to gaze at him.
The words of the book Alhaitham was engrossed with blur into blobs of black on the page and suddenly, he wasn’t comprehending them anymore. “Where is this coming from?”
Kaveh’s cheeks burned red. “When I fall asleep before we can…” he trailed off. “Sometimes I wake up and I hear you touching yourself.”
“Oh.” The book no longer mattered. He flicked his eyes to Kaveh’s.
“So, you can do anything you want to me when I’m asleep,” Kaveh repeated. “As long as you tell me about it afterward.”
“Are you sure?” Alhaitham asked because he could never be too sure.
Kaveh hummed. “Positive. I trust you.”
And for some reason, that insignificant moment became one of Alhaitham’s most important memories. Those words, I trust you , became the second most important set of words he had ever heard.
