Inej takes a step forwards. Almost imperceptibly, Kaz winces. “Then what are you going to do?”
Finally, Kaz meet’s Inej’s gaze, and she knows the look in his eye: he is drawing himself up, strapping on his armor. He is steeling himself for pain.
“I’m going to go to Lij,” he says. “And you’re all coming with me.”

Summary
Inej Ghafa hasn’t seen her family in four years. Not since she’s been taken. Now that it’s been so long since she’s seen them, Inej is scared and nervous to go back. One night, while sitting on the rooftop, Kaz asks her to teach him Suli. That inspires Inej to fight her nerves and finally find her family. She asks Kaz to go home with her and he takes this opportunity to learn more about her and her people. Once home, Inej is faced with the guilt of her past, the fear of family’s reactions, and the hope of finally being ghar (home).

“If you get out there while you’re drugged there’s no telling what you’ll do,” Wylan said, pushing past Kaz to get back to his work station. “I’d think you'd want to avoid pulling the Dregs into this gang war.” He yanked a cabinet open and rummaged around for a pipette. Opened the vial. Drew out a drop. In his head he ran through the motions of the synthesis: he’d gotten close, before, with the blood sample. All he had to do now was see it through to the finish.
“I know that.” Kaz’s voice was nearly a snarl, but then again it always sounded like that. There was still time. “I mean, why didn’t you lock it from the outside?”
“Like that would stop you," Wylan scoffed. "You need an antidote. You said the others were dead within the hour.”
“Only after killing everyone in their vicinity, Merchling, did you forget that part?”

“How are you doing, Brekker?” Nina asked when Inej left, and the door finally shut with a soft click. Kaz didn’t bother to look up from his work, tiredly scratching through some form or another.
“Polite of you to ask,” he muttered. Nina tilted her head, waiting for the sarcasm to come out full force. “You’re sweet to care, Zenik. I’m touched. Truly.”
“I don’t care,” Nina said loftily, though her eyes were fixed on his face. She hesitated, a little unsure if she wanted to leave this untouched or not. It somehow felt dirty to keep it a secret, though. Nina didn’t need the details, but she also wanted Kaz to know she wasn’t trying to hide anything. Taking a long breath, she continued. “But the voice in the canal asked me to make sure you’re okay.”

As Nina’s corpsewitch powers grow, the voices of the dead get stronger. Sometimes, it’s painful to hear them.
