Summary
“I just…I don’t understand,” Buck says, sounding so sad. So defeated. “Is it Tommy? Or - or is it guys in general? Is it me?”
Eddie could die, here in this moment. The shame is so palpable, so suffocating, that he wants the ground to swallow him whole. He wants to reach for Buck - wants to hold him, wants to kiss him, wants to take all of his aching away. But Eddie is the one who caused it. Eddie is the one who did this to him.
Can you be the cure, if you’re also the sickness?

Summary
He walks up to where Eddie and Bobby are, staring between the two of them, “So, what’s my husband doing in our uniform?”
Bobby laughs as he places a hand on Buck’s shoulder, patting it twice, “Good try, Buck, but try not to flirt with your new coworker, yeah?”
“Yeah!” Chimney shouts from- wait where did he just come from? One moment he was nowhere to be seen and next thing Buck knows he’s walking down the stairs and chiming into their conversation, “I thought you left that version of Buck behind.”
“Anyway,” Bobby cuts in before Buck can say anything to defend his honor, “This is Eddie Diaz, he’ll be joining us for his probationary period starting today.”
Buck just blinks a couple of times, looking to Eddie and then back to Bobby, “Yeah- I-” He looks back at Chimney then at Bobby again, “I know who he is? I’m married to him?”
“You aren’t wearing a ring,” Chimney points out, “and neither is he. Really, this was a poor attempt at convincing us of your lie, Buck.”
It doesn’t make any sense and-
Eddie’s laughing. Of course he is.

Summary
He puts down his drink and takes a deep breath, “I've been in love with my straight best friend for years and he’s currently in a relationship with the most wonderful woman ever. I didn’t think it would bother me much. I mean it was always inevitable he’d meet someone, he was perfect. But she’s equally as perfect, and his kid who I think of as my kid two because we’ve been co-parenting since we met, also loves her. I just feel so guilty that I hate her and sick to my stomach that he is with someone else.”
he turns, expecting to see disgust on the woman’s face, only for her to start laughing.
“20 bucks if I have you beat,” She offers.

Summary
“My kid loves her.” Eddie says, like that’s the end of the argument, and Buck has to stop and stare at his best friend, because what the actual fuck?
“Well, Christopher loves me too, so if that’s all that matters, I don’t know why you didn’t date me years ago.” Buck snarks back without thinking.
He hadn’t meant to say that.

Summary
“You did nothing wrong,” Eddie says, words firm but gentle. He needs Buck to know that, to understand nothing he did when he was four—god, he was four, so little and so new to the world and already having these terrible thoughts—would equate to his father’s attempt of murdering Buck for some twisted reason they may never know. “Absolutely nothing. God, Buck, no parents should hurt their kid, let alone try and kill them. You couldn’t have done anything wrong. You were four, Buck. Four."
“I existed, Eddie,” Buck whispers, “That was enough for them to hate me; enough for my father to try and kill me. Because I existed.”

or: i need buddies phone call after this episode (MAJOR spoilers for Lab Rats, do NOT read if you haven't watched the ep yet)
-
"Eddie,” oh, lord, that’s a whimper—something that makes his throat tight, his eyes widen, and his heart pick up. He’s heard that whimper before, when Buck shakes apart and cries so hard he heaves for air and vomits.
What the hell happened?
He must’ve said it out loud, because Buck stifles an ugly gasp into the receiver, all tinny and aching. “B-Bobby,” he croaks, chokes out as if speaking pains him.
Bobby? What happened with Bobby?
“Buck, what’s going on? C’mon, talk to me.”
“B…Bobby...”

“What do we want to call this? What are we now?”
"Chris has already informed me that we can’t be just boyfriends because we’ve been acting like a married couple for a long time.”
“Well, Chris isn’t exactly wrong. I’m sure the entire firehouse would say the same. I’m also pretty sure Ravi thinks we were married and then got divorced. I’m not really sure how he thought that made sense. I guess—”
“If I got you a ring tomorrow, would you say yes?” Eddie blurts out.
Or, Eddie, Chris, and Buck have arrived back in LA together, and the unpacking into their home has begun. Eddie just can't keep the burning questions to himself.

"Gave 'em my notice this morning. And now you don't need to worry."
He really did that for me...
After all that huffing and puffing, sabotaging every potential subletter and acting weirdly passive aggressive for days, Buck is going to be the one who's taking over his lease. It was the last step– the final obstacle Eddie had to overcome before finalizing his leave.
It should be a relief, a huge weight off his shoulders, but it just feels… sticky. Like the residue left on your skin from a ripped band aid. No matter how hard he tries, Eddie can't scrub away the feeling.

Summary
“Yeah, well,” Buck mutters under his breath. “It’s not like I loved Tommy or anything.”
Eddie accepts the coffee handed to him and takes a long, procrastinating sip. “I wasn’t sure. You fall in love fast. Like, in 10 seconds.” He probably doesn’t mean it in a mean way—his tone is even fond—but the words strike Buck like another bolt of lightning.
Buck looks down into his cup of coffee, watching it swirl, a manifestation of what his insides must look like, and loses his appetite. “I don’t think you have the right to say that.” It comes out harsher than he intended, and he winces, but Eddie doesn’t seem to notice.
Eddie just looks surprised, really. “I don’t fall in love fast,” he says incredulously, rightfully so.
“That’s not what I meant,” Buck clarifies, steeling himself to say what he needs to say next. It’s probably a stupid thing to say if he wants Eddie to leave on a good note and to remember Buck fondly. He takes a deep breath and lets the words fall from his lips anyway. “You don’t fall in love at all.”

Summary
Curling in on himself, Buck coughs in earnest, hacking violently enough that he tastes bits of copper on his tongue. Eyes watering, struggling to breathe, Buck shifts to his hands and knees. The vials roll away, leaving him with a free hand to pound against his sternum. The sensation of something crawling up his neck, choking him, has panic setting in until it’s finally free. Something plops onto the floor with an unsettling wetness.
Looking down, he sees a full grown string of honeysuckle, roots and all, tainted with splatters of blood in the silvery moonlight. Its nectar still lingers on his lips, sugary, delicate, ominous. The message is clear. Buck leans his forehead on the floor, and screams.
Even knowing this love would eventually kill him, for Eddie, he’ll let it.

Summary
Buck doesn’t believe he was ever meant to hear the words. He did though, and he wishes that he could change that fact. Because when he was hearing them, he felt like his chest was caving in, as if Eddie had physically hit him in the chest instead of feeding the potential renter what they wanted to hear.
“No ties here, everything that matters is in Texas.”
It rings in his ears over and over again. His mind is taunting him, not allowing him to just let it go. Buck feels childish, he feels exhausting. It’s ridiculous and he’s even aware of it, and he thinks that being aware of it makes it so much worse.
But then Chris calls Buck and says he wants to come stay with Buck. So those words get put on the back burner.

Summary
“You didn’t do anything, Buck,” Eddie replied quietly as he exhaled and pinched the bridge of his nose.
“Then what’s wrong? Why won’t you talk to me? Why won’t you look at me? I try to reach out, emotionally and physically and you just- exactly! You just flinched! You won’t even let me put my hand on your shoulder! It’s like I’m diseased or something and I just want to know why! Why-”
“Because I’m in love with you Buck!,” Eddie yelled, throwing his hands up in frustration.
Silence. Eddie didn’t think he had ever heard silence quite this loud.
“You’re in love with me?,” Buck asked slowly, as if he was savoring every individual word. “That’s it? That’s the problem?”
“Yes, that’s the problem!”
Eddie watched a multitude of emotions flicker over Buck’s face before he schooled his expression as he made up his mind about something.

Summary
“Sure, I love the zoo.” Chris is saying with that perfectly adorable giggle that makes Eddie want to melt whenever he hears it—which is far too infrequently these days. “My dad takes me there all the time.”
Eddie’s head snaps up at that, quick and sharp. His fingers go numb and he scrambles uselessly with the tongs as they fall with a loud clatter against the grill.
Because Eddie can count the times he’s been to the zoo on one hand.
It’s Buck who’s been taking Christopher there nearly once a week for years.

“Chim. Weird question?”
Chimney’s chair creaks. Buck cranes his head over the back of the couch and watches him straighten up, pop his back, close the folder.
“You only ever ask me weird questions,” he says, and then crosses the loft to sit in one of the armchairs. He levels Buck with a look that’s way too knowing for the amount of words they’ve exchanged. “What’s up?”
He takes a breath.
“What does it feel like to be a dad?”
in which buck is used to wanting things he's not allowed to have; it's just that he never thought being a father would be one of them.
