“Hannibal.” Alana says, her voice breaking on his name. It brings his attention back to her, and now he finds grief so powerful it hits him right against his ribcage. “Hannibal… It’s been days. I don’t think they’re going to find Will’s…” She pauses to swallow against the tears. “You didn’t kill him. I know you didn’t. But I don’t think he’s alive.”
“Will Graham is resilient.” He bites back, though the first strings of doubt are starting to creep across his senses, no matter how hard he tries to push them down. He looks away, not wanting to see her heartbroken expression. “He is resourceful and clever, and stronger than you believe.”
There’s another pregnant pause before she speaks again. “You were a psychiatrist, Hannibal. You know what the stages of grief are. You’re in denial.”

Hannibal wakes up in the hospital after the fall and finds out that Will has disappeared, and is thought to be dead. Hannibal knows better though, he knows Will is alive. He isn't grieving. He just... isn't. -

Will took Hannibal's hand in his and it reminded him of the time Hannibal had done the same for him. Had held his hand so delicately. Had bandaged it up with such care. Will interlaced their fingers together, and that's when he saw it.
Puncture wounds.
Puncture wounds covered with scarred tissue. On Hannibal's ring finger.
As if someone had tried biting it off. Had tried ripping his finger from his hand.

The subject matter has changed over time, from the groundless, ephemeral fears of a child with an empathy disorder abandoned by his mother, to an unmoored, loner teenager desperate for connection, and finally as an adult both terrified and seduced by the images conjured by his mind.
Post-fall, Hannibal is gone, and Will's tenuous grip on reality is fast unravelling.
