Chapter Text
Oikawa was tying his shoes while sitting on the staircase. Just below him on the floor was his little cousin Tobio, doing the same. He seemed to have trouble though. His little body was shaking and his hands trembeling. He couldn't get a firm hold on his shoe laces. Tooru understood why he was nervous, it was his first day of middle school, after all. He sat himself across his baby cousin and reached for the laces. "Here, let me do it", he told him. Tobio smiled: "Thanks Tooru" "Everything for my baby cousin", Tooru says and he ruffled trough Tobio's hair. "Hey, don't call my that!" But he laughed and didn't really mind. "Are you boys ready?", Oikawa's mother asked, as she came in from the living room. The Oikawa's and the Kageyama's lived together. The reason was very simple. Tobio's parents were always working, they were on businesstrips for months, came home for a few days and were gone again. Tobio couldn't be home alone ofcourse so it's overall easier like this. Nobody had problems with it. And because Tobio and Tooru grew up together they felt like siblings.
"I'm only bringing you by car today, okay? From tomorrow on you go by bike. It's way too early to be on your way to school!", his mom said. "It's because of volleyball training, mom!", Oikawa informed her. "Yeah, I know that. I just find it weird that you have to train so much. I get you like it and have to train but it's just a lot. On the weekdays you train in the mornings and the evenings and then you also train on saturday. You barely have time for homework!" "But mom, homework isn't as important as volleyball!"Tooru argued back. "How can you say that Tooru? It is very important! The most important thing in the world!" Their argument went on. Tobio didn't interfere. Tooru and his aunt always did this. For other people it may sound like their angry with eachother, but they were just dramatic. They liked fake arguing.
"Good luck Tobio! I know you will do well!"
Tobio smiled, still looking nervous. "Thank you, aunt Naya!" Naya turned to her son next and told him to take good care of his cousin. Tooru hummed in response. Then she took off and Tooru and Tobio made their way to the gym. Kageyama was looking more and more nervous as they came closer. Oikawa bumped him. "You don't have to be nervous", he said. "Yeah, I known that, but I can't help it", Tobio told him. "Hmmm yeah, well if it helps, just know that I'm their with you, so you're not alone"
Tooru opened the door from the gym. "Oikawa!", Iwaizumi yelled and he ran up to them. "Who's that?" he asked. Iwaizumi had come to their house before, but Tobio's very shy and he stayed in his room and never came to say hello. Tooru didn't want too push him, so Iwaizumi never really met him. He putted his hands on Kageyama's shoulders. "This is my baby cousin, Tobio Kageyama" Kageyama didn't like it at all that Tooru introduceted him as his baby cousin, but he didn't dare say anything of it. "Nice to meet you, sir", Tobio said and he bowed fast. Iwaizumi was a bit thrown of because he was called sir. He was only fourteen after all. But he guessed it was only because Tobio was feeling nervous. He looked like a shy boy, totaly different from his cousin. "You don't have to call me sir. I'm only two years older than you. Just call me Iwaizumi. Or if you want you can call me Hajime" The boy bowed again. "Okay, Iwaizumi!" Oikawa got a little bit jealous. "Hey, can I call you Hajime?" Iwaizumi shook his head. "No", he simply said. "No fair, Iwa-chan!" Hajime shrugged: "You give me stupid nicknames anyway" Oikawa got even madder (but not really, though) "That's not true!"
After talking a few more minutes the coah came over and told all the first years to get in a line and introdue themselves. Tobio was really nervous but Tooru gave him a thumbsup and everything went smooth. Well, at least he didn't mess up his own name, Tooru thougt. After that the second years and third years intoduced themselves to the first years. And Oikawa proudly introduced himself as the captain of the team. The first years looked at him with adoration and respect and Tooru really enjoyed that. Even Tobio had eyes full adoration. And he already knew that Tooru was going to be captain.
After that was a little bit off practise. Not long though. When it was time to go to their classes Tobio wanted to walk next to Tooru but he tolded him to walk with the other first years. "Make friends Tobio!" And he waved him off. But he waited to see if it all worked out and that nobody was bullying his cousin before he walked out of sight. Iwaizumi noticed this. "You really care much about him", he said. "Oh, yeah. I do"
