Grasping On To Reality [The Passage Of Fate Shall Bend]

Chapter 17: Decisive Battle - The USJ Incident Part 1.Ω

Notes:

So, hopefully you all grasped that the last 2 chapters were all a vision. That stray open bracket at the start of the last one was not a mistake 😉.

Trigger warning - multiple character death.

I do want to go add more details to the carnage so that might have to change to being graphic but we'll see!

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

The class crossed the threshold into the USJ, its blast door styled doors shutting behind them with a heavy clunk.

“OhmygodohmygodOH MY GOD! IT'S THIRTEEN!” squealed Uraraka as she left their group to get to the front of the class.

The spacesuit-clad hero giggled whereas Aizawa sighed.

“Just you?” he asked over Uraraka's fangirling.

“Yes,” replied Thirteen as they held up 3 fingers, “All Might got held up a little bit longer than expected by some villain activity throughout Mustafa.”

Aizawa sighed again, deeper this time. “Unless half the district exploded, he shoulda left it to the other equally capable heroes. Nezu better have a chat with him when he gets to the school…”

Thirteen nodded before turning to the class. “Anyway kids! Welcome to my domain, the Unforseen Simulation Joint or USJ for short! LegallyDistinctFromUniversalStudiosJapan.”

The joke had the class laughing, especially since Kaminari had missed the full title announced by Aizawa and blurted out that exact statement as a question before leaving the bus.

“Jokes aside, I have one or two…maybe three or four… well I have a couple things to say to you all about the session ahead of us!” The hero continued, beginning a small lecture about the importance of a hero learning Quirk control in the context of disaster relief and how many Quirks were plain and simply destructive and had to be reeled in when in those situations to avoid more casualties.

Izuku would have taken more in were he not tapped on the shoulder. He turned around to find Yaoyurozu standing over him with her hand out, a flash in her palm and a shower of unstable multicoloured, predominantly Light, Ether particles dissipating to reveal another nesting doll.

“Pretty…” he whispered before he froze, having meant to think that instead.

The two teens blushed furiously before the heiress coughed lightly and regained her composure.

“S-so you can see the lights.” She stated matter-of-factly.

“And we're having this conversation now it seems…” Izuku thought to himself.

“Yes, I was pretty sure it was light Ether the first time I saw you use your Quirk when no-one, including yourself, reacted to the shower of it as you formed the canon during our first d-day-”

“No-ones ever seen it other than me, though it is hard for me to admit. I had thought myself a little bit crazy and chalked it up to vague hallucinations. That changed when you walked in on our first day. I could see the same particles flow into you, yet no-one reacted. Everyone else only reacted when you formed that condensed aura of power during your ball toss but I could see you pull energy from the air, could see the winds shimmer with power when you pushed the ball forward, even when you absorbed Bakugou’s attack during the battle trial. Hmm, I must admit that it feels good to be seen, ironic as it may be due to my status.”

Izuku blushed once more, he wasn't expecting to have a moment of vulnerability with any classmate so early into the year, let alone the one in front of him.

He knew of the Yaoyurozu corporation before coming to U.A. Most people did and it was hard not to. The family was about the closest thing to old money in a post Quirk world as one could get, the conglomerate having influence in a lot of the public consciousness. They had companies involved in the food market, housing, and general infrastructure. Not to mention rumoured alliances in the government with regards to development of tech, and what they didn't directly offer, they funded.

Having the heiress of the family be vulnerable with a nobody like him when they'd barely interacted? Unheard of.

“W-we s-should talk later, th-this feels i-important.” He managed to stutter out. Though the borderline speech impediment had barely affected him since starting at U.A, situations like this caused it to worsen dramatically.

The girl nodded before they both turned to face their teacher, Izuku’s eyes catching Ashidos expression go from a dramatic pout in his direction to a smile and a thumbs up.

He remembered his earlier discussion with the girl and hoped she didn't think him some hopeless flirt. Though, maybe this is what she'd meant earlier about the other girls.

“-so with that said. We will be going into each of the themed areas today and running one quick drill as a group to familiarise ourselves with them and how our Quirks interact with each environment before w-”

“Oh sick! U.A. hired a villains-for-hire acting group for this session too?” Kirishima interrupted, pointing to the centre fountain where a purple mass of clouds formed. The cluster of energy coming together to form a swirling vortex from which a mass of people came out.

Followed by a hulking mass of purple muscle.

“STAY BACK!” Aizawa shouted, shooting his capture tape out and around the Hardening user and moving him away from the railing he’d leaned over.

“Those are real villains!”

The colour drained from the students' faces at their teachers shout. The underground hero pushed Kirishima away from the guard rail they stood in front of as he began scaling it before turning to the other teacher.

“Thirteen! Get in contact with Nezu and evacuate the students. I'll stall for time.”

Izuku’s eyes widened, his hero knowledge working in overtime at the statement. “Eraserhead! You can't take on all those villains at once? Y-you excel at single combat, not crowd control!”

The disheveled hero turned to face his student, a sharp grin on his face, “Don't worry kid, I'm not some one trick pony.”

He leaped down from the ledge and began engaging a group of villains, taking them out efficiently before moving on to the next group.

The class all huddled together as Thirteen pressed a button on the side of their hero suit, “C5 to callsign MB we have an code twenty two dash 5 incident, repeat Channel Five to Motherbase we have an active villain break at the USJ.”

The hero scoffed and turned to face the students, “Kaminari! Try to get through to U.A via your comms, boost the signal with your Quirk if you can.”

The blond student nodded, before cringing after his attempt. “Nothing but static Thirteen.”

“Darn… looks like we're stuck.” The hero continued, before a mass of darkness opened up in front of the group. “And it looks like we have company…”

Izuku was jolted by a cold splash of water, finding himself suddenly sinking rapidly. He swam up towards the surface as a dark form approached, not knowing if a villain was approaching.

He paddled frantically, only for the blur to shoot past him, when he felt something tie around his waist. There was no time to react as he was dragged out of the water and into the air, his vision blurry from the water before he landed sloppily on the deck of the ship.

He spluttered for a moment, sound finally breaking through his water logged sense of hearing.

“-doriya! MIDORIYA!”

He gasped for air, “ACKH, I-I-I’m f-f-fine. Th-thanks Tsu. You saved me.”

“Kero, I…I thought I wouldn't make it.” She said softly, “One of the villains was almost on you and I-I…” his classmate started crying, a shock in and of itself as she'd mentioned how emotionally muted she could be due to her Quirk.

“But you did! Y-you d-did get me. Thank you… now, we need to figure out a way off this b-boat, Aizawa seems like he’s struggling.”

They looked out towards the centre of the USJ, their teacher fighting against a steadily decreasing amount of Villains.

“Any ideas, Kero?”

“I-I’ve got one.”

The scene changed again, Asui and he were on the shore in front of the fountain. Aizawa’s face smushed by a hulking mass of flesh whose Ether felt WRONG.

A tear in space opened in front of the Frog Quirk user, a shout from the leader.

A muffled scream as his classmates face decayed into dust in front of him.

Izuku rolled as he landed from the portal, the heat around him unbearable as he heard someone else tumble behind him.

“OOF.”

Izuku turned to find Mashirao, his classmate with the tail Quirk had also been sent here.

He wanted to check up on him, wanted to ask if he saw what happened, but they were quickly surrounded by Villains, one of which was manipulating the flames around them.

The fire inched slowly closer.

It burned

Izuku landed on sodden wet ground, he could feel the rain start to seep through his thick head of hair.

The winds here whipped against his face, worsening the cold he felt, as two of his classmates approached.

Before they could say anything, Tokoyami and Koda were blasted by a wall of controlled wind and Izuku heard a crunch.

Moments before the same happened to him.

Izuku blinked, shouting for his teacher as he watched a hulking mass of flesh slam him down into the ground.

Eraserhead screaming out as his Quirk turned off.

The Villain reared its arm back once more, lifting his teacher's head again, before it charged its Quirk through its arm.

The way it manipulated its Quirks Ether felt wrong, infact, the being itself oozed Ether as if its body was barely held together.

“Nomu!” A shout from the lead villain, Izuku turned to see the man covered in severed hands. “Kill the kid.”

His head whipped back, only to see a giant hand slam him into the ground.

“MIDORIYA!” Screamed Sero, as he felt himself be pelted with sharp objects.

“MIDORIYA!” Asui screeched as a Villain redirected her acid onto him, instantly dissolving through his bare flesh.

“p-p-please. Please no.” He watched as Uraraka was lifted above the monster that just felt WRONG.]

The noise of skin ripping and bones popping jolted him.

“Midoriya!” Aizawa shouted.

He was in class.

The Monado closed against his desk, dropping to the floor.

He glanced around frantically as he shot up from his seat, feeling faint before he grabbed his stomach and ran to the front, ignoring the shouts of his friends as well Katsuki’s insults before he threw up into the bin.

The class burst into a cacophany of noise before Aizawa raced over, eyes wide.

He couldn't hear what his teacher was saying.

He touched his own arm, his face, he made sure he was breathing.

“I… I n-n-need to talk t-to Ne-nezu, NOW!”

Notes:

Hey y'all!

I'm uploading this chapter hurriedly while on my break, i just NEEDED to get it out there. There will be a proper end note and I'll make some minor edits but please, i hope you all enjoy!

Notes:

Hi Y'all, It's Me! I'm back again with something different yet familiar!

Honestly even though I said that the original version of this fic was simply 'On Hold' I basically abandoned it, there were too many things that shouldve been planned and i very much didn't plan them so after waiting a while, replaying most of Xenoblade 1, buying and playing most of Xenoblade 2 and re-reading some of My Hero i decided to give it another go, this time witha bit more of a plan and some better execution! I also think i needed a break from my other fic as i'm still indecisive about the next chapter.

Anyway, this should go a bit better this time! (The first 2 chapters will be kinda similar to the old version with a few changes including a bigish one in the first one so i hope it's worth the read!)

[Update 09/05/2023]

Hi Y'all! Adding this here and to the first chapters notes specifically! I'll cut right to the chase, I'm basically rewriting this fic again. thankfully, I can simply add bits and pieces to the already uploaded chapters, although in some cases like Chapter 4, I ended up fleshing it out a LOT more. My suggestion is a quick re-read once more just to catch up on the changes as I go along, this being brought upon by the release of the third Xenoblade game as well as its DLC Future Redeemed. I will say, there will not be direct references to the events of those games, however I will use some story ideas from them here as they are developments for characters i have used and WILL use throughout this fic. Thank you for reading! I hope you enjoy!
