Chapter 1: Prologue: the trail

Chapter Text

**October 25, 1995**

The morning light filtered through the dense canopy of trees, casting elongated shadows that writhed across the forest floor. The air, heavy with the scent of pine and the earthy remnants of the previous night’s rain, bore an unsettling stillness that seemed to suffocate any semblance of cheerfulness. As the sun ascended, the camp stirred with laughter and the distant thuds of soccer balls echoing across the field, yet in one secluded corner, an oppressive silence clung like a specter, thickening the atmosphere with a tension that gnawed at the edges of every camper's consciousness.

Madison stood at the periphery of the clearing, her heart pounding furiously as the harrowing events of the preceding night replayed mercilessly in her mind. The haunting image of Emma’s pallid face, her eyes devoid of life, sent a shiver coursing down Madison’s spine. She had stumbled back to camp just before dawn, breathless and trembling, only to discover that the counselors had already begun to assemble the campers for a morning briefing. Their hushed whispers and grave expressions had painted a grim picture, yet the details eluded Madison, lost in the chaotic storm of her fear. All she could focus on was her sister.

As the sun ascended higher in the sky, the camp counselor, Ethan, called for the campers to gather. Madison maneuvered through the throng of children, her heart racing as she desperately searched for Emma’s familiar visage.

“Listen up, everyone!” Ethan’s voice boomed through the clearing, attempting to instill a sense of calm amid the rising anxiety. “I understand we experienced a fright last night, but we are safe now. A search party is currently looking for Emma and the others. We must remain composed.”

Madison’s breath caught in her throat at the mention of Emma. The others? Who else was missing? A surge of indignation welled within her. How could they refer to Emma as merely lost? In that moment, a fierce resolve took hold of her.

“Excuse me!” she shouted, raising her hand, her heart thrumming in her chest. “What do you mean by ‘the others’? Who else is gone?”

Ethan faltered, his gaze darting anxiously to the other counselors, who shifted uncomfortably, their unease palpable. “Uh, well—”

“Madison, it’s okay,” interjected a counselor named Sarah, her tone soothing yet firm. “We don’t know precisely how many strayed off the trail. We just need to focus on locating them.”

“No!” Madison insisted, her voice rising, fueled by desperation. “We need to search now! Emma needs us!” The campers surrounding her murmured in agreement, their faces a blend of concern and fear.

Ethan stepped forward, trying to assert control. “I understand your worries, but it is perilous out there. We must wait for the other counselors to return.”

But Madison would not relent. “I know Emma better than anyone! Just give me a flashlight, and I will find her!”

The tension in the air was nearly suffocating as Ethan weighed his options, his resolve crumbling beneath the weight of her determination. Finally, after what felt like an eternity, he sighed. “Very well. But I will accompany you.”

Madison’s heart soared momentarily, yet a wave of trepidation washed over her as she realized they were venturing back into the shadows, back to the place where everything had unraveled.

As they traversed the forest, the sun dipped lower in the sky, casting elongated shadows that twisted and contorted like the very trees surrounding them. The sounds of the camp faded into an ominous silence that pressed against their ears. Madison’s heart raced, a primal instinct warning her of impending peril.

“Do you think Emma is hurt?” Ethan asked, attempting to alleviate the tension that hung thick in the air.

Madison shook her head, her determination unwavering. “She’s frightened. She needs me.”

The deeper they ventured into the forest, the more the air seemed to shift. The once vibrant sounds of camp life faded, replaced by a profound stillness that enveloped them. Madison’s heart raced, a visceral instinct alerting her to an encroaching danger.

“Stop!” she commanded suddenly, raising her hand. “Did you hear that?”

Ethan halted, straining to listen. “Hear what?”

“There! It sounded like… crying.”

They stood frozen, the forest holding its breath. Madison’s heart raced as she strained to catch the sound again. It was faint yet unmistakable—a small, pitiful whimper that reverberated through the trees like a heartbeat.

“Emma?” she called, her voice trembling with a mixture of fear and urgency.

The whimper intensified, more frantic, igniting a surge of determination within Madison. She surged forward, her flashlight cutting through the encroaching darkness as Ethan trailed closely behind, though he hesitated, glancing back nervously.

“Perhaps we should remain on the path,” he suggested, his voice taut with apprehension.

“No! She needs us!” Madison pressed on, driven by an unyielding resolve.

The trail narrowed, the trees closing in around them like a suffocating embrace. The crying—now unmistakably Emma’s—echoed in the stillness, beckoning Madison deeper into the woods. She pushed through the underbrush, branches clawing at her arms, but she was undeterred. Nothing would prevent her from reaching her sister.

“Emma!” she cried again, panic rising in her throat. “I’m coming!”

Suddenly, they broke into a small clearing, and Madison froze. There, in the dim light, stood Emma—just as she had seen her the night before, yet now her eyes glittered with something far darker. Madison’s heart plummeted as she beheld the twisted smile creeping across her sister’s face, the shadows around her shifting in unnerving ways.

“Emma?” Madison’s voice faltered, a chilling dread creeping into her bones.

The whimper grew louder, more frantic, and Madison surged forward, her flashlight cutting through the growing darkness. Ethan followed closely behind, but he hesitated, glancing back nervously.

“Maybe we should stay on the path,” he suggested, his voice tight with unease.

“No! She needs us!” Madison pressed on, fueled by determination.

The trail narrowed, the trees closing in around them. The crying—now unmistakably Emma’s—echoed in the stillness, pulling Madison deeper into the woods. She pushed through the underbrush, branches clawing at her arms, but she didn’t care. Nothing would stop her from reaching her sister.

“Emma!” she cried again, the panic rising in her throat. “I’m coming!”

Suddenly, they broke into a small clearing. Madison froze. There, in the pale light, stood Emma—just as she had seen her last night, but now her eyes glimmered with something darker. Madison’s heart sank as she saw the twisted smile creeping across her sister’s face, the shadows around her shifting unnaturally.

“Emma?” Madison whispered, fear clenching her gut. “Is that you?”

The little girl tilted her head, the smile widening until it looked almost unnatural. “Madison…” she rasped, her voice a jagged echo. “Help me…”

Madison’s instincts screamed at her to flee, but she couldn’t leave her sister behind. “What’s wrong? What happened?”

“Help… me,” Emma repeated, her voice thick with a hunger that twisted Madison’s stomach.

Ethan stepped back, his flashlight beam shaking. “We need to go, Madison. Now!”

But it was too late. The moment Emma lunged, the forest erupted into chaos. Shadows twisted and morphed around them, darker than the night itself.

“Run!” Ethan shouted, grabbing Madison’s arm.

In that instant, she took one last look at her sister, who now stood impossibly still, a grotesque mockery of the girl she once knew.

As they tore through the underbrush, Madison couldn’t shake the feeling that they were being hunted, the darkness of the forest closing in around them. The air filled with a cacophony of distant cries, echoing through the trees, and as they ran, she realized—this was no longer just about finding Emma. It was about survival.

And the shadows were beginning to close in. And quickly.
