Momo's heart pounds in her chest as she stares at the empty bottle, the neck pointing straight at her.
The circle erupts into drunken laughter and cheers. Someone grabs onto Momo's shoulders, giving her a little shake, and it takes her a moment to realise that it's Mina. Her eyes flicker up to where the person at the other end of the circle is seated, already looking at her curiously.
"Momo-chan, what’re you waiting for?” Mina says with a giggle, nudging her. “Go on!”
“U-Um—”
“Kiss! Kiss! Kiss!”
Seriously. Why did Momo agree to play this game again?
Already crawling towards the centre, Setsuna waits for her with her hands resting on her lap. She looks way too composed for a situation like this, or maybe Momo is just extra nervous in comparison.
Honestly, Setsuna hasn’t changed much since high school. They were decent friends back then, though they mostly kept to their separate circles, only nodding at each other in the hallway or chatting casually whenever their classes wanted to hang out together. Still, every time they did interact, Momo would think the same thing—that Setsuna carries herself with a quiet yet bold confidence. She always admired that trait of hers.
It’s the same thing here, with Setsuna’s relaxed demeanour, like they’re not about to kiss right now.
Ah, why is Momo making a big deal out of this? Everyone’s waiting. And they’re all adults who consented to playing this silly game, though some of them might be a little intoxicated. Huh, maybe that’s the problem. Should she get a drink—?
“Hey,” Setsuna greets when Momo finally shuffles to the middle and sits on her heels. “Unhappy that it’s me?”
“What? No, not at all! I, um—” Heat crawls up Momo’s neck as her eyes dart away.
Setsuna’s laughter rings out in her ears, pleasant and warm. Everything is warm, actually. Someone needs to open a window.
“I won’t rush you,” Setsuna teases, like she’s actively enjoying this and trying to torment Momo. “You can take the lead.”
The lead? Momo’s lips part, about to argue—she’s never really kissed anyone, as embarrassing as that is to admit at her current age. But her voice dies in her throat when she sees the way Setsuna is smiling at her.
Her body is going to give out by the end of the night.
Momo closes her eyes first, trying to soothe her racing heart via deep breaths. She imagines the moment a thousand times in her head, like that would somehow make things a little easier, but all that does is remind her of her inexperience. Gosh, she really hopes Setsuna wouldn’t mind when she inevitably fucks this up.
When she’s ready, Momo reaches out blindly until her hands land on Setsuna’s shoulders. She can still hear the rest of the crowd blabbering around her, but that all fades into background noise when Setsuna comes closer, until Momo can feel their breaths mingling.
She stiffens when she feels one of Setsuna’s hands curling around her neck, holding her still. But, as promised, Setsuna doesn’t rush to close the gap, and Momo knows that this is her move to make.
Well. Here goes nothing.
The moment their lips connect, the hairs on Momo’s skin rise, goosebumps erupting all over her. Their noses bump, and she mumbles out an apology, but it cuts off when Setsuna tilts her head and presses their lips together firmer.
Oh. A gentle heat simmers in Momo’s gut as she falls victim to Setsuna’s kiss.
A million thoughts are running through her head, though none of them are quite coherent. Should she move her hands? Maybe touch Setsuna’s hair? It’s a nice colour—she heard that Setsuna only recently bleached it, but it goes well with her skintone. Ah, they’re still kissing, aren’t they? Is everyone watching?
“Momo,” Setsuna whispers against her lips, and Momo can only reply with a weak hum.
“Okay! Break it up, lovebirds, we don’t have all night!”
Momo rips herself away, her cheeks burning so hard she feels like her skin is going to melt off. Indeed, everyone was watching, varying degrees of joy or amusement on their faces. She rushes back to her seat, and Mina passes her a glass of water with a kind laugh.
As Momo takes measly sips of water in an attempt to cool herself down, the game continues on. She doesn’t see who spins the bottle next, for her eyes are too busy watching Setsuna, who is leaning back on her palms and saying something to Itsuka.
All of a sudden, Setsuna’s gaze turns back to her, and Momo’s spine straightens. Her grip tightens on her glass as she gives her an awkward shrug, unsure of what the appropriate reaction is when you’ve just kissed someone.
Even if it was just a game, and something they’ll all probably forget about by tomorrow morning… Momo supposes she kind of liked it.
Setsuna raises an eyebrow, a look of contemplation forming on her face. After a moment, she smirks, directing a wink over.
Momo blushes harder, taking another sip of her drink.
“Momo.”
Momo cranes her neck, wondering who it was that called her. Her footsteps stumble when she sees who it is, though, and she gives Setsuna a slight bow upon her arrival. “Hello. Will you be getting home safe?”
“Yeah, I’ll catch the bus,” Setsuna replies with a little wave. “I just wanted to check if we were cool. You did seem pretty reluctant to kiss me earlier.”
“A-Ah, it wasn’t because of you or anything!” Momo shakes her head frantically. “I was just quite nervous. It was my first time doing anything of that sort…”
“Really?” Setsuna peers at her. “You’ve never dated? I assumed many would be in line to ask the Pro-Hero Creati out.”
Momo laughs, tucking a bit of hair behind her ear. “No one has done such a thing. Besides, I’m sure not many people are actually interested in dating a hero.”
“That’s a shame. Guess that means I’ll be the first, then.”
Momo’s eyes widen. “You—?”
“Yeah.” For the first time that night, Setsuna loses that earlier confidence, her fingers fiddling with the front of her jacket. Momo stares at her moonlit frame, awestruck. “I thought it’d be nice if we could go on a date some time, just you and me.”
Momo’s heart nearly leaps into her throat. “I would love that. Thank goodness—I was worried that I ruined everything between us with that kiss or something.”
Setsuna lets out an incredulous laugh. “Why would you think that?”
“I’m not sure! Maybe it was really bad, and you’re just too considerate to let me know.”
Setsuna shakes her head, a smile pulling at her lips. She gives Momo a gentle punch to the shoulder, and Momo’s heart thumps pleasantly at the contact. “It wasn’t bad,” Setsuna assures. “And I’m sure we can get more practice in on our next date.”
Momo ducks her head, blushing again. “If you wouldn’t mind.”
