"I'm going to ask you to marry me, by the way" Ravi says offhandedly.
He hands Pip one of the two plates he's holding, both containing sandwiches, his own half eaten already.
She looks up from her laptop screen, her eyebrows scrunched in confusion.
"Was that your proposal?" She asks.
Ravi shakes his head her as he drops down onto the couch next to her. He takes a large bite of his sandwich.
"What? No, of course not, you plonker. Its going to be a surprise".
She laughs in disbelief.
"Uh, Ravi, I hate to be the one to tell you this but its not really a surprise if you announce it first".
Although she doesn't say it, she'd have said yes even if that had been his proposal. Its already been three years since they moved in together and she's long made up her mind that he is it for her. She doesn't need the bells and whistles or the big fancy proposal, she just needs him.
He bumps his shoulder into hers.
"Ah, that's where you're wrong, Sarge. You'll never know when its coming".
Pip closes her laptop with a small snap, her full attention on him now.
"Your strategy is strange and confusing".
"I told you I'm going to propose because I love you. And you hate being put on the spot. This way, if you decide you want to say no, you can give me a heads up".
She nudges him with her elbow. Its just like him to go from ridiculous to sweet with a single sentence.
"I'm not going to say no" she says quietly.
He grins at her, setting his empty plate down on their coffee table.
"No spoilers please" He leans in and kisses her.
She rests her hands on his chest, smiling against his lips.
Her chest feels warm and full.
"Do it soon?".
He presses another quick kiss to her lips.
"Okay" he says, his breath warm on her lips.
