'Out of it'

Summary:

Qifrey/Olruggio each undergo a procedure(Each chapter is one of them) which requires anesthetic-leaving their counterpart to take care of them.

WARNING: This fic includes discussion about the removal of wisdom teeth and centers around taking care of someone under anesthetic. If this makes you uncomfortable please don't read-your comfort matters more than a fic!!!

Notes:

I wrote another Oufrey fic also in modern AU called "Sugary Sweet"-that and any future-short-modern AU Oufrey fics (That includes this one) will all be in the same universe-unless the notes say otherwise. "Sugary Sweet" mentions and explains how magic is practiced in this modern world as well as how the apprentices are taught magic/if they are at all. If you'd like to see more and understand it better I suggest checking it out, it would truly mean a lot!!!

Chapter 1: One Witch Down

Chapter Text

Olruggio had been stressed all day. Ok, that was a lie. He had been stressed for weeks. And what was this, probably, pointless worry even for? None other than the thought of Qifrey undergoing anesthetic for a procedure.

He was getting his wisdom teeth removed.

Never too old for that, the dentist told him.

Qifrey was confident he’d be alright however the dentist stressed he should have a trusted family member or friend to take care of him, and drive him home after. Naturally, he asked his good friend Olruggio, while asking Alaira to watch over the girls. With confirmation from them both the appointment was made and before Olruggio knew it the day had arrived. Contemplating the procedure and the millions of ways it could have maimed Qifrey it was safe to say his anxiety was sky high as he paced in the waiting room as he had been doing for the past hour or so.

“Excuse me? Sir?” A sweet voice called, a bright eyed brunette nurse in aqua scrubs asked with a smile. Olruggio had never turned so quickly as his head snapped up. “Are you here for the man in room 04?”

Olruggio quickly approached her “Yes I am-uhm-is he alright?”

The nurse smiled and nodded “Yes he’s fine, just a bit out of it from the anesthetic though he should be functioning soon.” Gesturing forwards, Olruggio followed her to the room with hasty steps finally making it inside. Qifrey was sitting in a plush cream chair, in his lavender sweater and navy jeans-staring off into the ceiling.

A bit out of it the woman had said..a bit out of it? Qifrey looked so far gone Olruggio was convinced he'd been seeing stars.

Hesitantly approaching the delirious white-haired witch, he sat in a chair close by with caution and his jumbled up fears playing his brain like a lute, “Qifrey..are you feelin’ ok?” Slowly but surely Qifrey's head slugged to the side facing Olruggio with a dopey look in his eye, before a slow grin made its way to his face “Oh Olly! You're here! I just feel wonderful…..”

His talking was slightly muffled due to the gauze in his mouth; however, Olruggio was just happy he was okay, sighing in relief-something he didn’t know he was holding back. “Oh my Olly..” Qifrey reached out towards Olruggio’s face before gliding his hand from Olly’s forehead, to his cheek and finally his chin speaking with love and awe in his tone. “My aren’t you handsome” he giggled like a school girl with a crush. Olruggio smiled and sighed-taking Qifrey’s hand from his face and interlocking their fingers.

“You really are out of it ain’t ya?” Qifrey continued to laugh before the dentist who performed his procedure walked into the room with a smile. “Hello there, Mr. Olruggio is it? You're the friend who will be taking care of Qifrey over here?” Before Olruggio had time to respond the snow-haired witch was two steps ahead of him.

“Yes, my husband!” He was grinning ear-to-ear, his eyes still unfocused and his grip on Olruggio's hand tightening slightly.

Olruggio felt his face grow hot. He immediately turned to Qifrey “W-what!?”

Were Qifrey and Olruggio in a relationship? Yes, not long after Coco joined their home to be taught the ways of witches did Olruggio and Qifrey realize their feelings for each other. This romantic connection was something they were simply trying out for now, but marriage? Now that was a stretch. A very, very far away conversation they hadn't even had yet. However, Olruggio didn't mind Qifrey referring to him as his husband. It was simply-very sudden.

“Oh! I'm sorry I assumed you were friends based on how Mr. Qifrey talked about you before the procedure.” Olruggio quickly turned back to the doctor responding with haste “W-we are! Well no-yes! We are friends..and partners! But we're nowhere close to gettin’ married! I don' t know why he's sayin’ that.” At this the doctor's face shifted to a relaxed smile. “Of course I understand,” gesturing towards a delirious Qifrey whose mind was clearly not in the room with the rest of them.

“Sometimes, when individuals undergo anesthetic they will forget certain aspects of their lives, leaving themselves vulnerable to say whatever it is they may actually desire or feel. Though it can be difficult to decipher” the doctor glanced at Olruggio kindly “For him to ask you to watch over him must mean he truly trusts you.”

At this Olruggio's face fell slightly, his once tense shoulders relaxed and although he was still flustered he realized that even if Qifrey did not completely understand what he would say or do he obviously trusted Olruggio enough to let him witness this vulnerable state he was in. Olruggio felt his heart warm, it meant a lot to him that Qifrey made that conscious decision. Even if he wasn't quite conscious at the present.

After checking up on Qifey and leaving Olruggio some papers to fill out, the dentist made his exit leaving the pair together. After a while of silence Olruggio realized it had been a while since Qifrey had spoken. “Aye, Qifrey-” turning to face his friend Olruggio's words died in his throat as he gazed at the sad sight in front of him.

His dearest Qifrey was stuck, staring at him with wide teary eyes, streaks of already fallen tears evident on his red, puffy cheeks. “Qifrey! What's wrong? Are you in pain? Do you need somethin-!?”

“Why do you wanna divorce?” Qifrey's silent cry suddenly turned into a sob as tears flooded his face, leaving a confused Olruggio, only able to mumble a bewildered “Huh?”

Regardless, Qifrey continued-tears rolling down his cheeks. “You told the doctor we weren't married after I told him you were my husband. Why don't you wanna be married anymore? Did I do something wrong?”

Olruggio's heart ached at the sight of his precious Qifrey sobbing about a divorce for a marriage they never had, though the topic was honestly adorable. “Qifrey, I do love you and one day-I would like to…marry you..however we cannot possibly get a divorce because we just simply aren't married yet.”

Qifrey’s eye went wide as he blinked a few times before breaking down in tears again. “Then why haven't you proposed?” Olruggio couldn't help but smile at the sad but sweet sight of Qifrey crying over not being his husband yet.

With a laugh and a sigh Olruggio took Qifrey’s hand, kissing his ring finger and humming, “how about this. I promise you one day I will marry you-I will make you my husband. Just not today aye? How does that sound? That sound good?”

Qifrey was already back in a daze, cheeks as pink as peonies as he sluggishly nodded at the idea Olruggio was presenting. A small smile-as best as he could muster under all the gauze-beamed-visible as Qifrey agreed.

“That sounds lovely.”
