“Well, I think we can both agree,” Connie laughed. “He is one lucky turd.”
“Amen, sister,” June replied.
A beat of silence passed through the house as they glanced at each other in the dim lighting, which gave it a more intimate feel than it had to be.
Connie sighed with a need to break the silence. “But man, he kinda does suck, doesn’t he?”
June chuckled, looking at Connie a moment too long.
“Yeah, I wish men could be more like you, Connie,” she said, unsure if it was as much of a joke as she tried to make it seem.
Her remark got a laugh out of Connie; her signature laugh that made June’s heart skip a beat. In all honesty, if there was anything she was thankful to Dale for, it was the fact he brought her closer to Connie.
“You bet!” Connie continued, “and if they were as smart and beautiful as you, they’d be irresistable!”
June raised her eyebrows. “You really think I’m irresistable?”
“Well, wouldn’t anyone?”
“Ha! If I didn’t know any better, I’d say you were hittin’ on me!”
But then, the laughter quieted. For a moment, it felt like Connie was glancing over at June as much as she was. This silence was really uncharacteristic of them. Only now did June realize that they’d inched so close, their pinkies were nearly touching. She could feel the warmth radiating from her hand. It was the same warmth she saw in her smile.
Connie had glanced down for a second, before bringing her eyes back up to June’s. “Well, June I…”
June wasn’t the awkward silence type. She always needed to keep the conversation going. But right now, the only thing she could think of was the shiny red lipstick that painted Connie’s beautiful lips.
And there was no going back.
She moved her hand closer until it was on top of Connie’s. Unsurprisingly, Connie looked down in awe, and when she looked back up, June took the chance.
As far as her broken knee would let her, she leaned forward and used her free hand to cup Connie’s face, bringing it closer to hers. Before she knew it, their lips had connected in a deep, passionate kiss. To June, the surprising part was that Connie didn’t pull back.
They didn’t talk much for the rest of the evening spent in quiet, mutual understanding and company.
